Form of workWe're looking for Ph.D. students specializing in Distributed Databases, Compilers, Programming Languages, Parallel Computing, Distributed Systems, Big Data, Machine Learning, and/or Optimization to intern during the summer of 2024 (12 weeks). Our Ph.D.

It is a bold yet rewarding job!## **About the Teams**The **Programming Systems Group (PSG)** at Uber conducts research in computer systems, programming languages, and program analysis to make our systems efficient and reliable while enhancing developer productivity.

PSG members focus on solving real problems at scale for Uber across languages, platforms, and hardware and software stacks. The team has a track record of innovative research with publications in [PLDI](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3519939.3523720), [OOPSLA](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3360590), [ICSE](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3377813.3381350), [FSE](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3338906.3338919), [ATC](https://www.usenix.org/system/files/atc22-zhang-zhizhou.pdf), and [CGO](https://www.computer.org/csdl/proceedings-article/cgo/2024/10444835/1UUdNfF3JRu) and pioneering industry-standard open-source tools.The **Real-Time Data and Search Platform** is responsible for the real-time data stack as well as large-scale search infra.
This includes the large-scale messaging infrastructure via Apache Kafka, the streaming processing platform via Apache Flink, and the real-time OLAP platform via Apache Pinot. The team handles the Search experience on several product surfaces at Uber, enabling millions of users to find, discover, and explore rides, food, etc. Search has played an increasingly important role in bringing Uber closer to its vision.The **Storage Platform** team develops and supports the technologies for storing and serving the operational data at Uber.
This team provides manageable, reliable, secure, high availability distributed database services that are ideal for large scale workloads and also provides the infrastructure that connects these real-time distributed databases to the Big Data Platform that powers business decisions at Uber. These services can never go down, must always be performant, and are hit millions of times per second to power every rider, earner, eater, food provider, and freight mover across the world.## **What You'll Do**- Drive exciting, previously unsolved projects end-to-end.- Thrive in ambiguous product requirements.- Collaborate closely with peers from various subject areas.- Make data-driven decisions with exceptional execution.- Be motivated to own projects and push them forward independently.- Most importantly, have a passion for enhancing Uber's services for our customers.## **Basic Qualifications**- Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program studying distributed databases, compilers, programming languages, parallel computing, machine learning, data mining, artificial intelligence, constrained optimization, statistics, and/or a related quantitative field.- Experience in one or more object-oriented languages, including C/C++, Java, Python, or Go.## **Preferred Qualifications**- Research mentality with a bias towards action to structure a project from idea to experimentation to prototype to implementation.- Knowledge of underlying technical foundations of compilers/parallel computing/computer architecture/statistics/machine learning/optimization.- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business partners.- Experience in simplifying/converting business problems into technical problems.- Experience presenting at industry-recognized academic conferences and a solid publishing record in reputable journals and conferences.At Uber, we ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion.
