TxDOT’s Austin District is looking for Engineering Assistants I, II or III in our Engineering Assistant Program. This program will assist in training in a rotation of areas and providing you with experience for your PE license. Engineering Assistant I: B20: ($48,158.00 - $77,477.00/yearly)
Engineering Assistant II: B21: ($51,278.00 - $82,901.00/yearly)
Engineering Assistant III: B22: ($54,614.00 - $88,703.00/yearly)

Minimum Salary: 48,158.00, Maximum Salary: 88,703.00

Pay Basis: Yearly

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Position Description

This position performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
  • Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training, and continuing education.
  • Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to perform field investigations.
  • Performs traffic analysis and data collection.
  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Prepares environmental assessments.
  • Assist in creating plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
  • Uses automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Acceptable Substitutions:

  • Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering or a doctor of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.

Engineering Assistant I:

  • Participation in EACDP. - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering science.

Engineering Assistant II:

  • Participation in EACDP. - Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering science plus one (1) year engineering related experience.

Engineering Assistant III:

  • Participation in EACDP. - Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering science plus two (2) years engineering related experience OR passing Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience for gaining PE licensure and one (1) year engineering related experience.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs. or more.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to noise
