Amherst County Public Safety (ACPS) is the career side of a combined Fire & EMS Department in beautiful Central Virginia. Currently operating out of four rescue stations on a 24/72 hour schedule, our dedicated EMT/FFs and Paramedic/FFs respond to over 5,000 calls to service each year. Calls originate from areas in both urban and rural settings.
The EMS Captain is part of the ACPS Command Staff. They provide leadership and guidance to our EMS crews as the shift supervisor of four medic units. The EMS Captain is responsible for scheduling of personnel, ensuring adequate EMS coverage is provided to the community throughout large call volume times, providing on-shift training, assisting on critical calls, providing incident command as needed, resolving personnel disputes, and enforcing policies and procedures by providing structured discipline.
The competitive candidate must be certified as a Virginia Paramedic with 18 months of paramedic experience and three years of active EMS experience. Virginia EVOC3, FF I and HAZMAT certification is required with FF II certification within 18 months of hire. An Associate’s degree is required.
The hiring range is $55,484 to $62,500, depending on experience. An annual certification bonus of $3,000 for Paramedics and $3,500 for Advanced Paramedic is provided. Benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement Plan, employer paid life insurance, employer subsidized health insurance (medical, dental and vision), and paid annual and sick leave.
