International Gourmet Foods, Inc. (IGF) services restaurants, gourmet markets, clubs, caterers, bakeries, country clubs, breweries, wineries, and hotels throughout the eastern United States. The Driver Captain is responsible for coordinating the personnel, processes, and workflow of all delivery drivers routed in the captain’s geographic area. This role is critical to ensuring that IGF achieve and maintain high standards in customer service and product integrity upon delivery. The Driver Captain works as a member of a team that includes driver dispatchers, other regional captains, and the Fleet Captain.


Duties and Responsibilities
1. Ensure IGF Route Delivery Drivers have the resources they require to perform their work and that these materials, such as hand trucks, mobile phones, and clipboards, are tracked, maintained, and replaced, when necessary
2. Coordinate with the dispatchers (Springfield) or office staff (branches) to:
            a. Ensure that drivers are dispatched with the correct paperwork, including the delivery manifest,                              customer invoices, and returns pick-up sheets
            b. Properly handle and document delivery returns
            c. Ensure drivers’ compliance with IGF delivery and driver protocol related to:
                    i. Attendance
                    ii. Check-ins and incident reporting
                    iii. Phone answering
                    iv. Proper attire
                    v. Use of routing software, where applicable
3. Submit accident and injury reports; assign and oversee light-duty assignments, where necessary
4. Ensure that drivers’ DOT licenses are current
5. Manage drivers’ route assignments and schedules; assist with routing; provide daily route recaps
6. Serve as the replacement and swing driver for their geographic area
7. Coordinate with the Fleet Captain on vehicle issues, preventative maintenance schedules, rentals, replacements, vehicle-needs forecasts, and relationships with the leasing companies
8. Manage drivers’ performance reviews using an assessment-based approach involving metrics such as hours worked, mileage, number of stops, product type and volume, product temping, customer-specific practices, and customer feedback. Partner with other members of the delivery team to identify and track these metrics
9. Spearhead corrective action planning and reporting

10. On behalf of the Delivery team, serve as the primary liaison with the Accounts Receivable, Procurement, and Shipping teams
11. Participate in overall operations planning; make recommendations related to processes, resources, and staffing
12. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications (Required)

  •  Current DOT license
  •  Experience in deliveries and logistics
  •  Strong attention to detail and solid written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  •  Experience in project management and team leadership
  •  Creative and proactive work philosophy
  •  Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced variable environment
  •  Able to lead and work as a member of a diverse team
  •  On-call availability in emergency situations
  •  Able to pass a criminal background check
  •  Capable of working well as a member of a team and with minimal supervision

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Food industry background, preferably distribution, or back-of-house (kitchen)
  • Compliance experience, including quality standards and good manufacturing practices (GMPs)

Physical Requirements

  •  Must be able to bend, lift (at least 55 lb.), stretch, and climb (including ladders)
  •  Must be able to perform all delivery activities (checking, cleaning, loading, and pulling)
  •  Must be comfortable driving and working in inclement weather conditions with frequent stops
  •  Must be able to sustain prolonged periods of standing and walking
  •  Must be able to work across temperature zones (dry/frozen/refrigerated)
  • Requires bending, sitting, standing, walking, use of hands, arms, legs, eyes, and voice
