Job Description
The role of Labor Relations Manager is vital to enhancing our company's internal labor dynamics. This position involves spearheading efforts to foster a forward-thinking Labor Relations atmosphere, focusing on risk management, developing and implementing training programs related to labor, addressing external union activities, overseeing contract discussions and management, formulating strategies for internal crisis communication, and managing relevant projects within our dynamic, fast-growing cannabis enterprise. Candidates should bring a minimum of 7 years' experience in traditional Labor Relations or labor law. This role reports to the Senior Labor Counsel and collaborates closely with the teams in Retail, Consumer Packaged Goods (manufacturing/wholesale), and Human Resources to maintain and promote positive workplace relations. While experience in the cannabis sector is not required, a strong commitment to making a significant impact in this evolving industry is essential.
The position allows for remote work or being based at our headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. It includes up to 50% travel to support our operations across 15 states and address urgent issues as they arise.
Principal Duties
- Cultivate and maintain a supportive work environment free from third-party influence.
- Work closely with the Labor Counsel to devise and execute data-driven strategies aiding the company's growth across the nation.
- Independently manage the response to external union interventions, whether proactive or reactive.
- Serve as the chief representative of the company in managing workforce crises.
- Lead the risk evaluation process, ensuring timely resolution and mitigation of potential vulnerabilities.
- Proactively identify and address potential issues to prevent escalation.
- Implement and propagate Labor Relations strategies across the company.
- Build and sustain relationships within the labor sector.
- Lead negotiations for initial and renewal contract discussions.
- Direct the creation, implementation, and ongoing refinement of training programs.
- Spearhead additional projects such as policy updates, monitoring workforce trends, and adopting industry best practices.
- Coordinate and guide internal teams in Labor Relations activities.
- Ensure adherence to the National Labor Relations Act and relevant legislation.
- Work in partnership with HR and Employee Relations teams to develop and enforce proactive employee relations programs to minimize risks.
- Manage labor agreement administration, offer guidance on disciplinary actions and contract interpretations, and support in grievance resolution.
- Conduct investigations into grievance arbitrations as needed.
- Create and maintain tools and procedures for labor project management.
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of PowerPoint presentations.
- Manage the Labor Relations SharePoint site, ensuring it remains current.
Additional Duties:
- Foster strong relationships with both internal and external parties.
- Engage in the development of company policies.
- Keep informed on best practices for employee engagement and Labor trends.
- Understand Labor Peace Agreements.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation of board charges, grievance awards, and briefs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, with a Master’s Degree or Juris Doctor being preferred.
- At least 7 years of experience in Labor Relations within the private sector, preferably in a unionized setting.
- Experience in Labor Relations within regulated industries such as cannabis, alcohol, tobacco, or pharmaceuticals is advantageous.
- Capable of supporting management during labor organizing campaigns.
- Must have a broad understanding of labor laws, the U.S. government, regulatory environments, and current labor union developments.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time.
- Skilled in explaining complex issues in an understandable manner to all company levels.
- Proficient in project management and technology, including Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Adobe.
- Must exhibit accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45,830.88 - $55,194.17 per year
