The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 wastewater treatment plants, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment is seeking to fill the position of EHS Program Support and Communications Specialist, who will be a critical support for the Bureau's environmental, health and safety program efforts.
Job Tasks/Duties:
The EHS Program Support and Communications Specialist will provide office and field support to ensure BWT compliance with various EHS programs, develop high level EHS communication materials, manage BWT safety events and EHS employee recognition in program.
Responsible for:
a) Supporting compliance of the BWT Operations with various EHS Programs compliance (e.g. SWPPPs, RMP, Emergency Action Planning, Community RTK, Legacy Constituents of Concern, etc.).
b) Developing and implementing a EHS communication strategy that includes digital and non-digital communications and covers office and field employees.
c) Researching EHS best management practices, lessons learned, regulatory updates, etc., and preparing EHS newsletters.
d) Creating and updating content for the BWT EHS SharePoint website.
e) Designing EHS communication posters and various EHS campaigns communications. Managing printing and distribution of EHS posters.
f) Coordinating EHS employee recognition program. Identifying the best practices in the employee recognition applicable for City Agencies, determining EHS areas for employee recognition, promoting the program, evaluating the effectiveness of the program, obtaining employee's feedback on the program.
g) Planning, arranging, and coordinating safety events, initiatives, and campaigns, including annual DEP Safety Month. Tracking and promoting via various types of communications EHS national events/days.
h) Supporting and evaluating results of communication campaigns with the BWT EHS team. Generating metrics on the BWT EHS communication efforts.
i) Adhering to the DEP's style guide.
Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of satisfactory, full-time experience
in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time work experience as described in "2" above; or
4. A combination of education and experience that is the equivalent of the course work and/or experience
described in "1", "2", and "3" above. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 6 months of experience, up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 3 months of experience, up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
License Requirements
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Special Note:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, one year of satisfactory full-time work experience in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards.
