Designs and conducts educational programs for nursing staff. Coordinates orientation programs for new staff members, develops programs to keep existing staff up-to-date, and acts as general resource for nursing personnel. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks.
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
- Certification as a registered nurse (RN)
- at least 3 years of experience preferred
- BLS, ACLS, NRP, PALS etc instructor applicable to specialty area required or needed within first 6 months
General Responsibilities:
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities for clinical nursing staff. Communicate with Patient Care Service Directors and personnel to identify needs at all levels. Applies developmental principles (novice to expert) to the design and implementation of educational programming. Assist staff in skills acquisition, coaches and supports staff through developmental activities. Provides classes to ensure proficiency required by various clinical areas such as Critical Care courses, Certified Nursing assistant, and Home Health Aide courses etc. Arranges appropriate inservices on new equipment as identified by Patient Care Division or Purchasing.
- Develops and maintains consultative relationship with the Chief Nursing Officer, and the Patient Care Service Directors. Consults regarding clinical problems and education implications. Quality Assurance results, which may have educational implications, maybe shared for future course planning. Modifies and utilizes a variety of teaching methods to meet a diverse learner base. Provides Nursing Orientation and Patient Care Provider orientation as it relates to clinical responsibilities.
- Develops implements, and evaluates a competency based system wide nursing orientation for new graduates and/or nursing to hospital. Serves as an educational resource to assess the progress of new hires. Provides timely professional follow up communications to Directors and preceptors regarding new hires, identifies individual learning needs, and develops educational strategies. Collaborates on clinical pathways and departmental operation issues related to implementation of new policies, procedures patient care equipment, or standards of care. Serves as an educational resource for advanced classes required for specialty areas such as Critical Care Rehabilitation, and Oncology.
- Assists with mandatory education required by regulatory/accrediting agencies. May assist in accomplishing compliance with CPR review by being a CPR instructor or Instructor trainer. Participates in General Orientation presentations as needed. Provides classes for other mandatory programs as needed. Contributes to the professional development of nursing personnel. Acts as a role model professionally through the pursuit of learning as a lifelong endeavor. Reviews and recommends educational material for updating resources in the library and on nursing units.
- Participates in professional organizations-nursing wellness community and encourages others to participate. Contributes to personal professional development as well as the professionalism of the Clinical Excellence Department. Utilizes sound educational principles in development and execution of all educational opportunities. Attends and contributes to hospital and outside committees as appropriate. Evaluates develops, and revises policies & procedures as required. Supports and promotes continuing education in all appropriate forms. Maintains records required by department and regulatory agencies. Assists with preparation of capital and operational budget. Assists with departmental projects such as Health Quarters screenings, community education, and outreach planning as needed.
- Assist in development, coordination and implementation of patient safety programs to increase awareness and compliance with patient safety initiatives to prevent hospital acquired infections, medication errors and other patient safety programs/error prevention tools.
