Holland Public Schools, located in Holland Michigan The district has four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school and has an enrollment of approximately 3000 students. We offer a dual language immersion program in Spanish in grades K-8. Holland Public Schools has a diverse student population with approximately 47% Latinx, 9% Black, 6% Mulitracial, 3 % Asian and 35% White and approximately 64% free and reduced lunch.

POSITION TITLE: Educational Sign Language Interpreter forthe Deaf and Hard of Hearing

EFFECTIVE DATE: August 2022

QUALIFICATIONS: The person selected for this position will be the one who offers the best combination of training, experience, and attributes in accordance with the following:
  1. EIPA certified, elementary or secondary endorsed, performance score of 4.0 and passing score of the EIPA written test, PREFERRED.
  2. Experience working with DHH children preferred.
  3. Ability to demonstrate mature judgment and moral and ethical behavior.
  4. Ability to carry out instructions and responsibilities.
  5. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.
  6. Must meet the requirements of School Safety Legislation - Complete Fingerprint records required.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Educational Sign Language Interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communications among deaf or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. Furthermore, the interpreter may be asked to provide additional services for the student as needed. Responsibilities include:
  • Providing interpreter services of verbal and written communications for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Providing voice interpretation as needed.
  • Duties include interpreting a variety of materials in American Sign Language and may include providing some tutoring, supportive duties and related work as required.
  • Providing language instruction (preview or review of language concepts) during general education classroom time.
  • Providing interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, during regularly scheduled school hours.
  • Participating as a DHH/Educational team member to serve the needs of ALL students (including but not limited to making copies, filing, cutting, preparing materials, supervising, toileting, etc.)
  • Serving as a liaison to promote good public relations between the Deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing peers, staff, faculty members and parents.
  • Participating as a part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students as identified in their Individual Education Plan or as assigned by the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  • Maintaining regular and reliable attendance, performance, and physical ability to do the job.

COMPENSATION: Salary based on Board of Education/ Deaf and Hard of Hearing Staff Agreement
