BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish a rapport with program participants.
  • Serve as primary college counselor for the Jill Chaifetz Transfer School; supervise post-secondary advisement and documentation of post-secondary plans for all students.
  • Assist students in completing college and vocational program applications and financial aid forms; track and record college application, acceptance, and enrollment data.
  • Prepare and facilitate post-secondary planning workshops both in school and after school.
  • Provide academic support to students by pushing into classrooms and collaborating with DOE teachers.
  • Coordinate day and overnight college visits and in-school presentations by representatives from colleges and other post-secondary training programs.
  • Collaborate with Center for Future Education (Café) other BronxWorks programs to provide comprehensive post-secondary support to all students.
  • Assist students in SAT preparation and registration.
  • Conduct in-school and after-school workshops for students and their families.
  • Assist students with scholarship registration and support students in their scholarship search. Coordinate college fairs, post-secondary events, alumni panel discussions, and other events as necessary. Perform additional duties as assigned by manager.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate post-secondary counseling program at the Jill Chaifetz Transfer School (JCTS) to ensure that all students receive post-secondary advisement and establish and document post-graduation plans.
  • Supervise the recording and storage of post-secondary plans, assist students with college applicants, fee waivers, FAFSA and continually assess status.
  • Provide follow-up. Document matriculant status in post-secondary educational institutions.
  • Provide academic and post-secondary counseling, including referrals to vocational programs, collaboration with the Internship Coordinator for career counseling, and maintaining contacts with programs that offer non-traditional post-High School education.
  • Conduct in-school workshops for students and their families.
  • Perform counseling dues consistent with the needs of program participants.
  • Promote a post-secondary culture at JCTS to support the success of JCTS students post-graduation.
  • Escort youth on college visits.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study required.
  • At least 3-years experience providing counseling services required.
  • At least 2-years experience providing post-secondary planning preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with low-income students with significant hindrances to academic achievement Knowledge of positive youth development principles.
  • Ability to Work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and simultaneous projects while meeting deadlines.
  • College/Career advising experience strongly preferred Ability to speak Spanish desired, but not necessary
  • Experience coordinating direct service outreach event/program planning Experience working with immigrant students and families
  • Familiarity with NYC Department of Education policies and procedures
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
  • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
