Job Description

About Mass Audubon
Mass Audubon is the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England. Founded in 1896 by two women who fought for the protection of birds, Mass Audubon carries on their legacy by focusing on the greatest challenges facing the environment today: the loss of biodiversity, inequitable access to nature, and climate change. With the help of our 160,000 members and supporters, we protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient land, advocate for impactful environmental policies, offer nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and provide endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries. Explore, find inspiration, and take action at massaudubon.org.

About This Position
Mass Audubon Cape Cod encompasses six wildlife sanctuaries including two nature centers in Barnstable and Wellfleet and teaches extensive school, preschool, public and camp education programs. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Education Coordinator to join our year-round staff of 12 educators. The Education Coordinator (EC) position will work closely with members of the school programs team to provide in-school, field trip and afterschool programming primarily in the Mid-Cape region with some work on the Outer and Lower Cape. This position will lead and coordinate the Rivers to Sea Program in Barnstable schools.

During the school year, the EC will work with the school programs team to coordinate and deliver Mass Audubon preK-12 programming. This work will take place inside classrooms and school yards, online in remote classrooms and outside at our sanctuaries and other conservation areas including the salt marsh, tidal flats, and forest habitats. The EC will also work with other members of the education team to lead after school, vacation camp programming, and family programming. During the summer (July and August) the EC will lead public and summer school programs and assist day camp. Some work at Wellfleet Bay is required.
Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver programs (in-class lessons and field programs) which promote scientific literacy and an appreciation for the natural world primarily for local PreK-12 students
  • Work in collaboration with supervisors, including Regional Education Managers and statewide Education Department to ensure adherence to relevant program standards and regulations, as well as alignment with Mass Audubon audience frameworks and instructional best practices
  • Hire, supervise and train part-time/per diem field teachers to ensure high quality program design and instruction
  • Implement program assessment tools according to Mass Audubon guidelines and practices; analyze results for evaluation and communicate outcomes to supervisors for program decision making
  • During the summer, teach public programs, summer school and day camp. This would include work at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary
  • Attend and actively participate in regional, departmental and statewide staff meetings, and PreK-12 professional development
  • Teach afterschool programs, vacation week camps, family and youth group programs as needed
  • Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority
  • Maintain program materials and curricula

Qualifications
At Mass Audubon, our highest priority is finding the best candidate for the job. Research has shown that people of color and women are less likely to apply for jobs if they don’t believe they meet every one of the qualifications described in a job description. We encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our described qualifications or you have a less traditional background. We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

Must Haves

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in office software applications
  • Outstanding teaching and interpretive skills and experience and comfort with instructional technologies
  • Ability to exercise cultural competence and best practices in inclusion
  • Strong knowledge of natural history

Nice to Haves

  • Experience working in an afterschool setting

  • Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education

  • Experience delivering urban environmental education programming or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts Science Frameworks
  • Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese speaker

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $22.50-$24.83/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Mass Audubon employment also includes access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and the Reciprocity Agreement through the Consortium of Non-Profit Arts/Cultural/Environmental Organizations of New England. Mass Audubon employees also enjoy 13 paid holidays (holidays may shift annually due to where days fall within calendar).

We are engaged in an ongoing process of organizational assessment and change, designed to remove barriers and create a workplace where all forms of diversity are recognized and valued.
