Qualifications: Active and valid ISBE Professional Educator License (PEL), registered in Lake County, IL
Endorsements in Special Education at the PK level
Student teaching and/or current experience in this content area
Purpose: To create a flexible pre-kindergarten program for 3 to 5 year old children to ensure learning and personal growth; to motivate students to develop speech abilities, attitudes, skills and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further participation in the total school program, in accordance with each student's ability; to build strong ties between home and school; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Works with the Director of Special Services to inform district residents of the services available by making contacts with outside agencies and conducting child find activities.
- Identifies special education needs of 3-5 year old children through appropriate screening.
- Maintains all required special education paperwork.
- Conducts staffings and consults with parents relative to concerns, recommendations, possible service, etc.
- Refers children to SEDOL for possible placement in the SEDOL Early Childhood Program when necessary.
- Provides service to those children who are found to qualify.
- Informs parents and directs them to complete District 70 Enrollment Card, signing in the appropriate place for permission to provide service.
- Secures informed written parental permission to observe children in preschool programs, shares information with other therapists, agencies, physicians, professionals, etc.
- Takes the responsibility to insure that Individual Educational Programs are developed with parental participation and are reviewed regularly.
- Provides services to the parents of qualifying children by making them aware of developmental norms, providing helpful suggestions and materials for use at home, and scheduling meetings regularly.
- Consults with receiving kindergarten staff in the spring and fall to facilitate the transition of children from Early Childhood to kindergarten.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by an administrator.
