Overview:

The Driver Trainer and DOT Manager position is responsible for instructing and guiding employees in the safe and effective operations of vehicles. This role involves teaching proper driving techniques, emphasizing safety protocols, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The Driver and DOT Manager assesses and enhances driving skills, provides constructive feedback, and audits items such as vehicle maintenance, navigation, and adherence to traffic laws. This position must be an expert on cargo securement, NCCO ABC truck mounted crane operation, and jobsite safety awareness. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage driver training, ensure all drivers are qualified on the appropriate vehicle and corresponding training.

  • Administer our Driver Qualification (DQ) files for drivers with Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL). Create new folders as drivers are hired and archive files for former drivers. Add content in accordance with our file template when new items are received. Purge old content when appropriate.

  • Submit prospective drivers to our insurance representative for insurability approval, and coordinate with HR and EHS departments. 

  • Oversees pre-employment process for new drivers which includes participating in on-the-road driving tests. 

  • Assist our Fleet Manager by helping follow up and correct hours of service violations.

  • Responsible for understanding both DOT & FMCSA regulations in addition to Trench Shoring Company procedures which may be more stringent. 

  • Performs training in a variety of environments which includes job-sites, classroom, branch site, and on-the-road. This position acts as the primary trainer in helping both equipment technicians and drivers distinguish their roles and responsibilities. 

  • Perform safety assessments of driver and equipment technician teams. This includes direct observations, discreet indirect observations and performing demonstrations.

  • Active member of the EHS team helping the Operations team(s) with incident response, post-accident investigations and other related safety activities as needed.

  • Travel to all TSC branches for driver training and assessments. This will include scheduled trainings, and new hire onboarding. Trainings may be unplanned and will require an ability to keep a schedule flexible. 

  • Must be able to display discretion and respect for employee privacy while handling confidential information.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

  • This is an exempt position.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three to six years related driving experience.
  • Bachelors degree preferred, minimum required is high school diploma plus related safety certifications. 
  • Must have a valid Class A drivers license. 
  • Strong familiarity with permits process across multiple jurisdictions and class of vehicles. 
  • Advanced competency with MS Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Familiarity with mechanical aspects of vehicles, including pre-trip inspections and basic maintenance procedures.
  • Understanding of local, state , and federal regulations related to commercial driving is important. This includes knowledge of hours-of-service regulations, safety protocols, and any other relevant laws.
  • The ability to adapt to different learning styles and situations. Should be flexible in their approach to meeting the needs of diverse trainees.
  • Spanish speaking preferred, but not required.
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English required.
  • Proficient in basic mathematic skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Be physically able to routinely lift 70 pounds but are expected to not lift anything over 50 pounds on a recurring basis.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: Close vision; Distance vision; Peripheral vision; Depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • The employee must frequently wear Trench Shoring Company mandated safety equipment (including but not limited to high-visibility vest, hard helmet, approved safety glasses and safety-toe boots).
  • The employee will frequently be required to drive long distances to other Trench Shoring locations.
  • The position is a safety sensitive position.
