Position Summary:

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Community Engagement Equity Specialist will join the highly collaborative nine-member DEI team and will report directly to the DEI Operations Manager. A primary function of this position is coordinating the Engaging Women & Girls of Color (EWGOC) Initiative in alignment with the DBHIDS DEI goals to achieve the DBHIDS strategic frameworks, including PACE (Prioritizing to Address of Changing Environment) and TEC (Addressing Trauma, Increasing Equity and Engaging Community). To manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the EQGOC initiative, including speaking engagements to developing participant recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies of members across the board range of ages and cultural backgrounds targeted, as well as, overseeing the supervision and coordination of the EWGOC Committee and activities. Oversee the development of print and visual materials, including the logo for the initiative. Establish trusting relationships with women and girl-serving organizations, businesses, places of faith, etc., to ensure that all of Philadelphia's diverse women and girls feel welcomed, participate, and have sense of belongingness.

This position seeks an anti-racist, multi-associational, multi-functional individual who can communicate verbally and in writing effectively. The person in this rile will apply lived experience to enhance collaboration and to understand the unique needs of diverse communities and how we serve their cultural, language, and religious differences.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to working closely with the DEI team and internal stakeholders, working autonomously, writing grants, leading the development and coordination of various DEI platforms, committees, and workgroups, and participating in ongoing professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day activities of the Engaging Women & Girls of Color (EWGOC) Initiative including managing the EWGOC committee, implementing strategies, developing projects and organizing events.
  • Engage and create partnerships with community and grassroot organizations that support women and girls of color.
  • Amplify the mission and vision of the EWGOC Initiative
  • Coordinate internally with DBHIDS divisions or units to establish community partnerships, collaborate on community events, and facilitate connections to DBHIDS and city services, trainings, and volunteer opportunities
  • Coordinate externally with the provider network to provide linkages to behavioral health services
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of department-wide DEI priorities
  • Operationalize the DEI teams' 3-pronged approach of research, data, and input from the targeted population to inform the work
  • Actively participate in individual supervision/ DEI team huddles/ DEI Team presentations/ internal and external meetings and trainings.
  • Promote education/ awareness to reduce the associated BH and ID stigma
  • Create relevant resource materials and training reflective of cultural humility and linguistic and communicative competence.
  • Conduct research and data collection on societal disparities impacting Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and special populations to include women and girls of color, Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH), seniors, etc.
  • Research to identify innovative best/evidence-based practices that support DEI
  • Disseminate resources and information to the BIPOC, and special population communities to ensure their access to equitable opportunities
  • Employ a population health approach to promote behavioral health wellness
  • Develop tools and innovative strategies that support effective programming and service delivery.
  • Build partnerships with BIPOC, and special population community's members and stakeholders to advance racial and economic equity and increase the department's contractors with Minority, Women, and Disabled-owned Business Enterprises (MWDSBE)

  • Ability to develop political awareness and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel (primarily throughout Philadelphia and the tri-state area).

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred) with six (6) years’ experience in the social or behavioral sciences, education, human development, or human services. Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, human services, with a minimum of 3-years’ experience
  • Six (6) years’ experience in community organizing/community training.
  • Individuals with experience in Community Engagement need assessment, program development, research and evaluation and direct service related to health or social services.
  • Native Philadelphians or extensive experience working with the unique needs of the population.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling and/or repetitive wrist/hand movements for various lengths of time throughout the day.
  • Requires continuous, normal hearing and vision to exchange information.
  • Regularly works inside in areas that are adequately lighted and ventilated. Some fluctuation in temperature. No protective equipment routinely needed.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to adapt to continuous changes/demands of the job.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as maneuvering in office space, reaching file cabinets, fax, and copier machines when necessary.
  • Must be able to sit for up to two (2) hours looking at computer monitor and using a keyboard and mouse to perform data entry functions.
  • Ability to travel locally via personal vehicle, public transportation, and on foot between DBHIDS and PMHCC offices or other destinations as needed.
  • Ability to effectively utilize computers, databases, and related common office software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have a good knowledge of City transit system.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
