Position Focus:
Under the direction of the Office of the Provost and the Chair of the University Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct, the UWC Director takes primary responsibility for the overall operation and integrity of the UWC Office. In that capacity the Director oversees all UWC policies, procedures, and operations and provides leadership and guidance to the UWC staff. In collaboration with the Chair of the UWC Chair, the Director provides strategic leadership and vision for the UWC.
Essential Duties
1. Serves as the liaison to the University Title IX Office, Office of the Secretary, Office of the General Counsel, Yale Police, all Yale schools, and other University bodies. 2. Manages the formal and informal UWC resolution processes, including the formal hearing process and the alternative resolution process. 3. Serves as the chief correspondent with the parties, advisers, panelists, investigators and decision makers. 4. Participates in the determination of the UWC's jurisdiction to hear complaints, leads preparation for and attends UWC formal hearings, advises hearing panels on procedures and precedent; addresses informal complaints; recommends interim measures to protect and/or support all parties in a UWC formal proceeding. 5. Is responsible for advising and coordinating on reports and appeals of formal hearings, as well as maintaining UWC records including complaints received, actions taken, primary and supplementary documents and evidence, investigator reports, minutes, decisions and appeals in assigned cases. 6. In collaboration with the UWC Chair and Provost, oversees UWC member selection and invitations. Provost. 7. Serves as the direct supervisor of the Senior Associate Director and administrative support staff in the UWC Office 8. Is responsible for managing and overseeing the UWC budget. 9. Oversees UWC training, workshop, and orientation programs for a wide variety of University stakeholders.
Required Education and Experience
Law degree and eight or more years of experience in a related area or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Strong ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with internal and external parties, including the UWC Chair, parties and advisers to the hearings, members of the Office of the General Counsel, Title IX Office, panelists, fact- finders, decision makers, faculty, staff, and students.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability in exercising sound judgment, initiating and seeing tasks through with minimal supervision.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to identify and solve problems with multiple stakeholders; to make decisions regarding procedural matters, engagement in resolution of UWC matters, and independent discretion in consultation with university bodies and the press, and appropriate engagement of Office of General Counsel.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability in clear and analytical writing; ability to accurately and succinctly describe relevant policies, procedures, and exceptions to UWC parties, panelists, and others, while avoiding procedural errors. Applied experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint is also required.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Strong ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and meet strict deadlines in a team-centered, time-sensitive environment. Demonstrated professionalism, maturity, and experience with the prudent handling of extremely confidential information.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience with federal or other compliance management, particularly in the Title IX context, or management of legal procedures preferred. Experience formulating and facilitating alternative resolution processes. Familiarity with Yale or other higher education experience.
