Basic Function

The purpose of this role is to define the strategic routes to compliance in the fast-changing sustainability and circularity arena. The role is performed in a fast paced, challenging environment which deals with complex and sensitive regulatory and business strategy concerns on a global level. This position is responsible to bring the relevant expertise together, within product safety, legal and other stakeholders, and provide structural solutions to identify potential impacts, risks and opportunities and to enable swift business transactions around the world for the Circulen portfolio in the C&LCS team and APS, as well as the use of recycled or circular feedstock for all business units. This position is responsible for 'regulatory intelligence': identifying regulatory and NGO trending topics and positions and assess potential business risks and opportunities for relevant action to be taken by Product Safety. It provides for early warning indicators to the product safety community as well as other internal be it in legal, sustainability, government relations or the C&LCS business unit.

It acts as the primary contact for the C&LCS as well as Sustainability teams for all product safety topics including reporting or external ranking organizations.

Specific projects following from ERM activities around the management of potentially harmful substances will be led by this position.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Provide global direction and strategic oversight for sustainability related topics touching Product Safety, including reporting requirements
  • Define strategic options for routes to compliance, working out product safety concepts while considering business priorities and objectives and upcoming regulatory developments as it relates to Circularity and Sustainability, Responsible Care and/or United Nations' Sound Management of Chemicals. 
  • Translate complex and developing regulations into potential impacts for the L&LCS team and collaborates across product safety, legal and Government Relations to provide strategic positioning on Product Safety related topics resulting in company position on e.g. Use of Mass Balance in Product Stewardship Declarations, transboundary waste shipments, data gathering of recycled materials, use of recycled materials in sensitive applications, etc.
  • Provide strategic guidance for an agile, effective and efficient pathway to support M&A activities across the company.  Upon senior management approval, lead implementation projects
  • Represent the company on industry and trade association panels, consortia, etc. related to product stewardship, assuming leadership responsibilities where needed.
  • Provide scientific, chemical and product safety expertise and consultation in matters of regulatory interpretation and litigation.
Min. Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in chemistry, toxicology, engineering or sustainability. Graduate degree in law, chemistry, toxicology or engineering preferred
  • Minimum 15 years' experience in the chemical, petrochemical, and/or polymer industries, familiarity with associated regulatory issues and experience in the various areas of product safety (toxicology, chemical control, hazard communication and product stewardship, product risk management and global program/policy implementation
  • Strong human relations / interaction skills and ability to drive consensus
  • Good planning and organizational skills, and project management experience
  • Strong oral and written communications. Able to effectively interact with senior management, global business leadership, technical and product development teams, legal, industry and/or trade associations, outside consultants, customers, regulatory agencies, and the public
  • Able to delegate to and manage efforts of subject matter experts
  • Able to function in a fast paced, challenging environment dealing with complex and sensitive issues in global jurisdictions
  • Proven team building and leadership skills with a consistent track record of analyzing complex issues, solving problems, overcoming challenges, facilitating cross-functional collaboration, driving results, and achieving goals
