Job Description

The New York Times Video department is hiring a leader to oversee Video Operations and support team culture, ensuring the department has what it needs to produce the best video journalism.
You will manage a team focused on production and post production operations, from freelance logistics to media management systems. You will develop and oversee protocols for the recruitment and onboarding of new hires, and coordinate training opportunities and skillshares for current staff. You will work with your team to hone production workflows, and oversee their work to maintain and improve tools and technology. You are a people manager with experience overseeing operations in digital or broadcast video. We’re looking for someone that is organized and excited to identify improvements to routine processes that further our bigger-picture goals. You value collaboration, and have experience developing relationships and building consensus across disparate roles. Deep understanding of the competitive landscape for digital news video is essential.
You will report to the Director of Video.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage and support your direct reports, including recruiting, career development, and training.
  • Develop and oversee protocols for the recruitment and onboarding of new hires across the department, and coordinate training opportunities and skill shares for current staff.
  • Prioritize and oversee video department operations projects; including managing deadlines, creating execution roadmaps and coordinating with other departments.
  • Formulate and communicate video team goals, and track progress throughout the year.
  • Video tools, technology, and workflows: Oversee production and post-production teams, tasked with ensuring we have technology necessary for industry-leading video journalism.
  • Oversee video team budget, annual budget forecast and all budget related analyses at a high level; lead budget conversations with video team leadership and newsroom/company leadership.
  • Manage video’s annual process for journalism contests; coordinate with external and internal teams to bring together nominations, manage expectations and strategize on the best approach.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 5+ years’ experience in journalism or with a media company or other relevant organization, ideally with experience in a strategy or operations role.
  • At least two years experience managing direct reports.
  • Experience managing production and post production work, including setting up, overseeing and improving systems to increase department effectiveness.
  • Experience with budget management within media organization or production or post production projects.
  • A strong analytical, planning and project management skills, including the ability to identify strategic issues, frame and analyze problems in a structured way, and develop and implement high-impact, actionable solutions.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience prioritizing and managing multiple projects in fast-paced environments, and staying calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Track record of improving organizational culture and making organizations more diverse, equitable and inclusive.
  • Experience communicating in writing and in person clearly, concisely and persuasively.
  • Experience with project management tools (eg. Airtable, Google Suite, Asana), and with video production tools.
  • Project management experience and experience with workflow design, preferably within media operations.
  • Experience working in a newsroom environment and communicating and planning across different departments and key stakeholders.
  • Experience working in video journalism on national and international news coverage.
  • Commitment to The New York Times mission and values.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $145,000.00 and $160,000.00.
