Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (“The Clarice”) at the University of Maryland is part of the College of Arts and Humanities. A world-class center featuring exceptional performance, arts education, and creative expression, and six performance venues, The Clarice is home to UMD’s nationally recognized School of Music (SOM) and School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) and its own artistic platform, Clarice Presents. Together these units leverage creativity, innovation, scholarship, and community engagement across the arts to support student and independent artists of all levels and voices. Many of the performances and activities of these partners are also amplified through Arts for All, a university-wide initiative dedicated to combining the power of the arts, technology, and social justice to collaboratively address the world’s grand challenges.
As a member of the Office of Marketing and Communications for the College of Arts and Humanities, the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Performing Arts is responsible for leading the marketing, recruitment, and communications strategy for the performing arts units at The Clarice. Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Marketing and Communications, the Executive Director of The Clarice, and other senior leadership, the Director strategically integrates and leverages branding, messaging, public relations, advertising, audience building, and creative and digital experience campaigns to ensure they are boldly conceived and effectively executed. The Director also uses audience data and analytics to help achieve sales and participation goals. The Director will supervise four staff on the marketing and communications team.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English or a related field
Experience:
Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in marketing and communications, with a strong preference for experience in a performing arts organization
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Established and demonstrated experience with strong leadership, team-building, and staff motivation
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and is savvy about current trends, strategies, and practices in arts marketing, audience development, and promotional initiatives
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to work collaboratively, build relationships, and effectively manage multiple partner relationships
  • Creative, analytical thinker with a data-driven approach to evaluating marketing performance
  • Ability to build and manage brands
  • Exceptional marketing, writing, and editing skills
  • Exemplary organizational and time management skills
  • Experience creating and delivering strong marketing content across a range of digital and traditional media
  • Proficiency in advanced features of Microsoft Office products and the Google Suite with the use of virtual meeting tools such as Zoom to work collaboratively.
  • Understanding of and strong interest in artistic programming, the arts in general, and community engagement
  • Schedule flexibility and ability to meet expectations of occasional night and weekend responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, managing multiple priorities, building consensus, and meeting deadlines.

Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Master’s degree or MBA in not-for-profit/art marketing, integrated marketing communications or a related field
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working for a performing arts organization
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Skills in market research and ability to analyze and strategically apply data analytics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mission and goals of SOM, TDPS, and The Clarice.
  • Experience in developing earned income goals and budgets

Salary: $112k – $140k commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
