WASHINGTON COLLEGE - CHESTERTOWN, MD
Position Type
Regular Staff (FT)
Description

Washington College invites applicants for Director and Curator of Kohl Gallery, a non-tenure track faculty appointment. The successful applicant will design and implement a sophisticated, diverse program of contemporary, historical, and student art exhibitions with related lectures, artist talks, and other events. The Director and Curator will also teach one course per semester, to be developed within the applicant's area of expertise. Gallery exhibitions and events should cultivate Kohl Gallery's role as a vital visual arts center, advance its mission of engaged teaching, and complement the College curriculum in a range of disciplines. We are excited to work with an enthusiastic arts professional who will develop their own innovative vision for a small campus gallery in collaboration with scholars, artists, and students on campus and beyond. The director position is a full-time, year-round position with flexibility to accommodate research and/or creative practice. Budgeted salary range: $60,000 - 65,000 commensurate with experience.

Gallery responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement, and install all Kohl Gallery exhibitions;
  • Design and coordinate publicity across media;
  • Recruit and collaborate with artists, guest curators, and outside partners, as well as Washington College faculty;
  • Facilitate majors' year-long Senior Capstone Experience and oversee student exhibitions;
  • Administer student interns and employees;
  • Manage budgetary and day-to-day operations of the gallery;
  • Engage in outreach to key constituencies on and off campus;
  • Identify and cultivate individual donors and foundation support.

Teaching responsibilities include: one four-credit course in each of the Fall and Spring semesters in the studio art program. Specific courses will vary based on applicant's interests as well as Art and Art History Department needs. The Studio Art curriculum emphasizes contemporary artistic thought and practice through rigorous, interdisciplinary investigation of artistic media, techniques and approaches. Courses are structured to lessen the boundaries between artistic disciplines, and to facilitate conceptual depth and fluidity between artistic media. A major tenet of the program is the connection between meaning and making. Courses in museum studies or arts management would also be a welcome addition to our curriculum.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an MFA in Studio Art or PhD in Art History or a related field. Strong candidates will have one to three years' experience in a gallery, museum or other comparable arts setting.

To Apply: Candidates for the position must apply online. Please submit a letter of interest, CV, sample syllabi, and evidence of curatorial experience (for example catalogs, press releases, reviews, or planning documents). Portfolios of individual and student artworks (and/or a link to your artist website) may be submitted as well, as applicable. Please also upload a contact list for three references (including name/title, email, mailing address, telephone, and nature of relationship). References of semifinalists will be contacted directly for a reference letter. If you have questions regarding the online application process, contact the Office of Human Resources at 410-778-7298 or Employment@washcoll.edu.
