Position Title: Homeless Guest Services Director

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Department: Homeless Guest Services

Status: Full-time, Exempt


General Function

This position provides overall leadership and guidance to the Homeless Guest Services program of SBRM in concert with the leadership of the COO and President. The main responsibility of the role is to engage, train, and empower a team of staff and volunteers to run the shelter operations. The director is also expected to provide strategic planning, program evaluation, and outside partner collaboration as a representative of SBRM’s homeless programs.


Position Requirements

This position requires ability and experience in leadership, case management, direct work with homeless individuals, and effective team management. The incumbent must have strong self-initiative and sense of responsibility while also being able to work cooperatively in a team environment with a proven record of enabling others to act and do their best work. This position involves assessing needs of individuals relating to areas of employment, housing, mental and physical heath, family relations, and addiction recovery. The incumbent must have a strong ability to communicate with community leaders to further community awareness, build support of Homeless services, and create an effective referral network. This position requires a variety of hours in which evening and weekend work will be involved. The Director must champion SBRM’s mission, vision, and values and is held to a high level of integrity as a leader in the organization-this includes supporting and caring for SBRM’s faith-based work.


Necessary Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and training. The ideal candidate’s background will include relevant experience and training in social work, counseling and/or homeless outreach. We will also be looking for candidates with experience working with rehabilitation, drug and alcohol recovery, and mental health issues. Bi-lingual in English/Spanish is a plus.


Principal Activities

  • Lead the Homeless Guest Services team and be responsible for their activities
  • Set the tone for the Homeless Guest Services Program and lead weekly meetings with HGS team
  • Oversee all current and future programs within the Homeless Guest Services Department (i.e. emergency shelter, case management, outreach)
  • Actively develop and further the work of both existing and future services to our Homeless Guests, including pilot programs and initiatives
  • Monitor operational policies and procedures
  • Work with SBRM Leadership Team to represent the HGS department and solve cross-departmental issues
  • Work cooperatively with both Men and Women’s Programs staff regarding program residents' role in Homeless Guest Services as well as mutual clients
  • Supervise, hire, and train all employees in the Homeless Guest Services department
  • Set and maintain professional boundaries with residents, guests, and peers
  • Manage the Homeless Guest Services budget, including planning and analysis, being responsible for all the HGS department’s discretionary expenses
  • Ensure HGS staff are adequately trained and connected to resources to develop further skills
  • Stay up to date with current events, best practices, and emerging trends in the homeless community, both locally and nationally. This includes researching and implementing evidence-based practices, as well as maintaining knowledge of relevant policies and legislation affecting homeless individuals

  • Provide case management and relationship to Homeless Guests
  • Assess the needs of individual Homeless Guests, including employment, housing, mental and physical health, family relations, and addition recovery
  • Be an advocate for the individuals in our care

  • Collaborate with other community agencies
  • Attend community meetings and work with appropriate county/state agencies and nonprofits
  • Connect community leaders to further community awareness and support of Homeless services
  • Establish partnerships with other agencies to meet the needs of guests outside our scope
  • Maintain, assess, and grow SBRM’s efforts in getting outside agencies to work with our clients, including:
    • Neighborhood Navigation Centers
    • SB Public Health
    • Educational Institutions

  • Supervise daily activities of Homeless Guest Services program
  • Monitor and intervene in dangerous behavioral issues
  • Ensure physical and mental safety for the guests
  • Set criteria for program policies and procedures
  • Set rules for TB testing and other health-related matters
  • Ensure that HGS programs are adequately staffed

Effect on the End Result

This position ensures that the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission operates effective, compassionate, and safe Homeless Guest Services within the visions and policies prescribed by the Board of Directors and the laws of the State of California.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • $65,000 - $90,000 annually. The salary range posted reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this role.
  • Company sponsored retirement plan with a 4% match.
  • 15 vacation days, 12 holidays, and paid sick time.
  • Employer sponsored health benefits (100% of employee premium and 50% of dependent premiums).
