Salary range for this position is: $74,904/yr. - $103,440/yr. (depending on experience)

Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Success, the Director ofFirst Year and Career Services (FYCS) will be key member responsible for guiding and implementing the vision of FYCS at Seattle Central College. This role works collaboratively with the larger Student Services and Instruction Divisions, including enrollment services, academic advisors, program liaisons, faculty, and others to holistically support new students at Seattle Central College. FYCS is a combination of intentional activities and experiences designed to help new students learn and build essential skills to be successful in their education and personal pursuits. The timeline of FYCS begins with the students’ admissions and is tailored to the students’ strengths and needs with targeted academic and campus-wide programming in their First Year at Seattle Central. A successful overall student experience is interdependent with campus resources, organizations, and our larger community. Additionally, this role will play a key part collaborating campus and district-wide to implement a first-year experience course and First Year activities and experiences.
This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week. This position is typically scheduled to work Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM, may vary depending on program needs and occasionally will include evenings and weekends as needed.

What you will be working on:
First Year Experience Programming

  • Partner with faculty and staff to create and promote comprehensive First Year experience programming, services and workshops to general population Seattle Central College students
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the campus and district on the overall development and vision of a First Year Experience, with a strategic eye on our historically underserved students
  • Oversee the vision and timeline of the First Year Experience workgroup and participate in district First Year Experience committee and efforts
  • Serve as content lead for the First Year Experience Workgroup, planning First Year programming (I.e., orientation and welcome weeks) in partnership with various offices throughout campus (such as Student Services and Instruction)
  • Create and maintain structure of an online First Year Experience canvas shell in collaboration with FYCS staff, E-learning, and faculty
  • Assist with campus-wide efforts to build and assess a First Year Experience course/seminar for identified students
  • Lead vision for FYE program communication efforts in partnership with the campus Communications and Marketing department to continuously manage the marketing and recruitment strategy for first-year experience programming (i.e., New Student Orientation, FYE course/seminar enrollment, etc.)
  • Collaborate with instructional deans and the curriculum committee to scale up a First Year experience course Partner with departments across campus to coordinate welcome week functions and other coordinated experiences for students in their First Year
  • Provide budget management and resource planning for the center
  • Serve on appropriate college committees such as the District FYE Workgroup, Starfish Functional Team, District wide Career Services related committees, etc.
  • Provide equity, diversity, and inclusion leadership, training and professional development opportunities for staff
  • Career Services Programming
  • Collaborate with district Career Services colleagues to carry out Career Services programming and advising
  • Lead campus efforts around Career Services events and workshops
  • Create and implement vision for Career Services advising
  • Serve on identified district and community-based Career Services related committees
  • Team Supervision and Organizational Leadership
  • Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, supervision, performance evaluations, and leadership of First Year and Career Services staff
  • Manage, train, and provide visions and direction for the First Year and Career Service staff’s delivery of programming and student-centered services, with attention to continuous improvement and support of student enrollment and retention
  • Lead the team in developing efficient processes and procedures for enrollment, documentation, tracking, and serving new and returning students; engage in continuous process improvement
  • Responsible for budget management for First Year and Career Services department
  • Manage and facilitate conflict resolution techniques between staff and performance improvement plans with staff when necessary
  • Create a student-focused, collaborative and supportive team environment that is response to diverse staff and student needs
  • Oversees the general day-to-day operations of the First Year and Career Services center, including programming and activities related to First Year experience and Career exploration
  • Develop and implement a referral process using technology to seamlessly and proactively refer students to an academic area of study
  • Serve as an advocate for First Year students furthest from educational justice, and for policy changes that impact these students
  • Integrate partnerships with local community-based organizations and institutions into First Year and Career Services
  • Lead assessment and evidence/data analysis for all programming under the First Year and Career Services area by partnering with assessment and institutional research teams to ascertain the efficacy of new initiatives and strategies

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, student development, psychology, human relations, or related field
  • Two or more years of progressive leadership such as program development or managerial experience
  • Two or more years of advancing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) such as professional level experience in culturally competent advising, community or campus event planning, orientation/first-year experience, leadership development, diversity initiatives, and/or staff training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of theoretical frameworks that guide work with first-year college students and student leaders including retention theory, student development theory, identity development theory, and social and cultural capital; an ability to align scholarship with practice and experience working with and developing programs for first-year students and leaders.

Physical Requirements:
The Position

  • Typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to Perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office.

  • Is regularly required to provide 1:1 support, present to small groups, and work at a computer exercising repetitive hand motion with or without reasonable accommodation.
