Job Responsibilities and Requirements
The Director of Investment Accountingand Analytics is responsible for leading the Investment Accounting Policy andInvestment Accounting analytics for the broader Investments organization. He/she will be actively involved in the critical areas of investment policy, new investment due diligence, data analysis, valuations, impairments, data quality management, reporting across multiple accounting bases, and key initiatives of the Investments Team and Tokio Marine group such as vendor due diligence, automation projects, and improving operational workflow. In addition, the role requires working closely with portfolio managers, third-party vendors, and other key stakeholders within the organization. He/she will have a solid understanding of GAAP and Statutory Investment Accounting principles and a solid command of various fixed income and equity instruments to best leverage this position as one of influence to make strategic decisions. The Director will also demonstrate core technical competency around accounting pronouncements including the ability to interpret and translate guidance into operational workflows.
The role will work closely with senior management of RSL, Delphi Capital Management, and the associated Tokio Marine entities for whom assets are managed. Inherent in this is the expectation that ad-hoc and non-standard requests are to be effectively incorporated into the daily workflow of the team as needed and that the team is prepared to adapt to time-sensitive requests in an efficient manner. The Director will be able to communicate key concepts, policy decisions, and financial results with gravitas to build trust and confidence with all stakeholders.
Investment Accounting Policy
  • Ensures all GAAP and Statutory investment-related guidance is appropriately and accurately reflected in the accounting system, financial disclosures, and internal documentation.
  • Works with stakeholders across the organization (including TM companies and auditors) to implement new accounting guidance, review application of existing guidance, and develop controls and processes around effectively adhering to such guidance.
  • Leads the review of adherence to Investment Accounting Policy within the third-party Investment Accounting system and proactively identifies inconsistencies prior to the financial close process.
  • Leads discussions with external stakeholders around Investment Accounting Policy and interpretation of guidance including the management teams of various TM companies.
  • Works with internal and external portfolio managers to assess the impact of new investments on accounting treatment, and appropriately documents such treatment in policy memos.
  • Thoroughly understands and communicates impacts of various investment types upon the financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and related disclosures and footnotes.
  • Establishes best-in-practice Investment Accounting policies, and works closely with stakeholders within the organization as well as with other companies for which assets are managed. This includes the valuation of securities, impairment policies, valuation allowances, income recognition (particularly around accretion and amortization), financial disclosures, and other key areas.
  • Provides analytical support for the quarterly impairment process and proposes recommendations to management based on analytical conclusions using discounted cash flow models, relative value analysis, and additional internal models designed to support an impairment or non-impairment conclusion.
  • Participates in management reviews of monthly and quarterly results to ensure consistent application of Accounting Policy. Contributes to discussions through analytical commentary and suggestions for continuous improvement of controls and workflow processes.
  • Follows industry and regulatory updates around new pronouncements and ensures that Investment Accounting policies are being followed by such items.

Analytics
  • Leads the analysis of key Investment Accounting results including earned income, realized gain and loss activity, change in unrealized, and impairment activity.
  • Leads the analysis of activity related to the statement of cash flows for GAAP and statutory statements.
  • Leads the analysis of GAAP and statutory asset classification schemes. Ensures classifications are consistent with GAAP and NAIC guidance where applicable.
  • Leads the review of the statutory statements to ensure consistent application of NAIC guidance including all investment schedule footnotes and supplemental interrogatories.
  • Manages the review and impact of changes in IMR and AVR for life entities and ensures that controls are adhered to and reviewed in a timely manner.
  • Leads the assessment and analysis of non-admitted assets and accruals for statutory entities.
  • Comprehensively understands and calculates asset-based RBC and statutory compliance for life entities in accordance with NAIC guidelines. Develops appropriate control and review process to ensure timely and accurate calculation.
  • Proactively leverages technology and automation tools to streamline the review of key data points and to analyze large sets of data in an efficient manner.

Portfolio Valuation
  • Oversees valuation of an investment portfolio, including assessing appropriate data sources, valuing securities in accordance with accounting guidance and internal policies, and enhancing the overall valuation control environment.
  • Leads the review of the investments portfolio for harder-to-value assets and ensures documentation to support such valuations are comprehensively reviewed with asset managers and internal stakeholders.
  • Leads and maintains effective controls around valuation disclosures including fair value levels, level 3 roll forwards, valuation methodology documentation, and presentation of loan portfolio on financial statements.
  • Builds and reviews models to independently verify valuation of various investment types using multiple methods including discounted cash flow analysis.

Team Management
  • Builds and maintains a team that can support technical requests and Analytics with the ability to respond to inquiries and changes on short notice.
  • Promotes professional development of all staff including technical and qualitative skills. Enrolls staff in continuing education programs offered by the Company as well as external programs based on relevance and management approval.
  • Develops and documents workflows for standardized processes for staff including the month-end close, financial disclosures, and investment analytics.
  • Challenges staff to identify areas of improvement in workflows and control environment.

Project Based Initiatives
  • Participates in improving the overall Investment Accounting workflow based on feedback from all key stakeholders and challenging external vendors to improve upon deliverables and capabilities.
  • Leads the Investment Accounting Policy and analytical-related items pertaining to audits during quarter-end and year-end. Develops an efficient audit model to accurately produce work papers, ensures appropriate levels of review, and provides timely information to auditors as requested. Assists in managing the relationship with auditors around Investment Accounting Policy and accounting analytics, including presentation of results during quarter-end reviews to audit partners as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with colleagues and peers outside of the company to obtain additional perspectives and ideas for potential implementation of best practices.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Related Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • 8-12 years of experience in accounting or finance
  • US GAAP and statutory insurance Investment Accounting experience required
  • Experience documenting complex investment structures and transactions and interpreting accounting guidance and its impacts on presentation of financial statements
  • Extensive knowledge of accrual accounting, foreign exchange translation, and amortization election methods per GAAP and statutory guidance
  • Experience creating auditable and consistent work papers that are readily available for review with internal and external stakeholders including senior management and external auditors
  • Experience working with Investment Accounting systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with valuation techniques across fixed income, equity, and loan asset classes, including the ability to perform discounted cash flow analytics
  • Successful track record of change management and implementation of enhanced processes.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience
  • Solid understanding of fixed income instruments and concepts, including discounting and time value of money principles
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a concise and understandable manner
  • Ability to work under pressure and to provide detailed results in such situations
  • Demonstrates ability to be thorough, following assignments through to completion
  • Strong Excel skills around advanced functions including VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, pivot tables, arrays, and data aggregation techniques
  • Experience working with various investment systems including custodial, loan processing, Investment Accounting, and portfolio management systems

Ability to Travel: Up to 25%
