Job Responsibilities and Requirements
The Senior Investment Accountant is responsible for working across all disciplines within the Investment Accounting Department. The Senior Investment Accountant will perform and assist in leading critical investment reporting functions and department initiatives. In addition, the Senior Investment Accountant is expected to assist with the development and completion of a variety of ad-hoc projects including the Company's implementation of IFRS. The Senior Investment Accountant is also expected to be able to provide coaching and oversight to other staff members on the team and to review the work completed by other staff members on the team.
Project Based Initiatives
  • Provides assistance to management for IFRS implementation and in producing IFRS-related disclosures as assigned.
  • Provides assistance with special investment structures including accounting treatment and documentation.
  • Continually work to automate and optimize process workflows and spreadsheet models related to impairments, disclosures and financial reporting.
  • Assist with development of control framework under IFRS
  • Assist in analysis and reconciliation between GAAP and IFRS reporting frameworks
  • Actively participate in department initiatives and projects involving other areas of the broader Investments organization.
  • Assist in documenting and communicating to senior management the status of the implementation project.
  • Work with external and internal auditors during the implementation to ensure timely auditing of opening balance sheet, accounting policies, newly implemented controls, and other implementation activities
  • Proactively recommends changes and/or improvements to work flow processes.

Impairment Analysis
  • Produce impairment-related analyses on at least a quarterly basis including OTTI watchlists, qualitative and quantitative Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) write-ups. Includes working with various investment managers to obtain relevant documentation and support for impairment conclusion.
  • Ensure that impairment conclusions are consistently applied in accordance with applicable GAAP and Statutory accounting policies, as well as consistent application across various entities for which assets are managed.
  • Monitor compliance with "intent to sell" guidance related to impairments via monitoring of subsequent sales to each quarter-end.
  • Provide analytical and reporting support for internal portfolio managers.
  • Research, document and assist with implementation of relevant accounting guidance including CECL and valuation allowances across different accounting bases (i.e. GAAP, Statutory and IFRS).
  • Prepare and/or review applicable disclosure-related tasks including credit and non-credit balance roll-forwards, statutory disclosures, and other impairment-related requests from management as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Related Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years of work experience in accounting, with preferably at least a portion of that being experience at a public accounting firm.
  • CPA designation or working toward a CPA designation is preferred
  • CFA designation is not required but is considered a plus
  • Understanding of insurance investment accounting in accordance with GAAP and statutory principles.
  • Understanding of IFRS basis of accounting, including IFRS 9 Financial Instruments not required but is considered a plus.
  • Ability to independently research accounting guidance including new and complex accounting guidance and draft and implement accounting policies.
  • Knowledge of time value of money concepts such as discounting, compounding, and internal rates of return.
  • Ability to communicate complex information, both written and verbally, in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Must have disciplined organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, solve problems, organize, prioritize and meet deadlines as needed.
  • Proven ability to interact and influence effectively at all levels within and outside the company
  • Demonstrated independence to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Solid proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. It is expected that the Senior Investment Accountant demonstrate competency with various Excel formulas including V- and H-lookups, pivot tables, database functions, and arrays.

Ability to Travel: Up to 10%
Work location may be flexible if approved by the Company.
