Title: Director, Global Litigation & Investigations
Position Description
Applied Materials has an exciting opportunity to join our world class Global Litigation & Investigations Team. This team is responsible for safeguarding Applied Materials' innovations and reputation. We build relationships and collaborate with key partners across the company to protect the company's most valuable assets. We leverage cutting edge technology and techniques to investigate and take action, while relentlessly focusing on prevention and risk mitigation for the company.
As part of this team, you will be primarily responsible for identifying, assessing, and managing litigation risk in all aspects of the company's business, including new product and technology development, M&A and JV activity, and commercial contract negotiations. You will also oversee a complex litigation, pre-litigation, and investigations docket, with a focus on intellectual property (IP) protection and enforcement.
This position requires identifying and solving complex problems that impact the direction of a global business. Candidates will be expected to have a solid foundation of litigation and investigations experience with an emphasis on trade secrets. Candidates should also demonstrate sound legal judgement, a willingness to take on challenging issues, and an ability to quickly learn and grow alongside an increasingly dynamic business environment.
This position can be based out of Applied Materials' Santa Clara Headquarters or Austin Campus.

This includes counseling and/or partnering with other members of Applied's Legal and Compliance Organization, including commercial, IP, and M&A counsel, to advise business stakeholders on litigation risk to inform strategic business decisions.
  • Manage offensive and defensive investigations, litigation, and pre-litigation matters, while collaborating with outside counsel when needed to cost effectively resolve matters. This includes managing all aspects of these matters, including strategy, early case assessment, settlement analysis, budgets, discovery, and staffing.
  • Raising lessons learned from investigations and litigations and working with cross-functional teams to address and mitigate risk for the company.

Desired Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school and currently admitted to practice law in one or more US jurisdictions
  • 8+ years of litigation and investigations experience at a top tier law firm
  • Ability to assess litigation risk, engage in early case assessment, and leverage strategies for cost reduction and pre-litigation dispute resolution
  • Experience interviewing / deposing individuals in both fact finding and oppositional settings
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team to manage litigation and conduct investigations, and ability to gain the trust of business stakeholders to achieve a desired objective

Bonus Qualifications
  • Substantive trial, arbitration, and/or adversarial administrative proceeding experience
  • Previous in-house experience (preferably at a technology company with global operations)
  • Experience conducting M&A IP due diligence assessments for divestitures and acquisitions
  • Experience counseling on contract terms related to dispute resolution and IP protection
