The role of Director, Federal Affairs is to direct outreach and engagement with Congress and federal agencies, policy development efforts and member advocacy engagement.

Essential Functions (defines the critical end results expected of the jobholder related to the accountabilities above)
- Play a leading role in setting overall strategy to identify and advance ASM policy priorities.
- Keeps the CEO and executive leadership team informed of policy/advocacy results as it pertains to the Society’s overall vision.
- Provides advice on strategies and tactics to achieve the goals and objectives to ensure that ASM is a leading and effective voice in advocating policies that advance the microbial sciences.
- Ensures a strong presence on Capitol Hill and with the Executive Branch to foster policymaking favorable to the field and the membership.
- Manages and develops grassroots advocacy program leveraging ASM membership and the public to help ASM members understand the role they can play within the policymaking process, ensuring public policy is favorable to advancing the microbial sciences and strengthening member value.

Supervisory Responsibility
- All facets of this position are self-directed within the policies and procedures approved by ASM.
- In partnership with the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), this position is responsible for departmental decision-making regarding personnel actions, the acquisition and utilization of resources, procedures, and control systems.
- The incumbent is responsible for making hiring decisions, managing employee performance, coaching, mentoring, and providing approval for payroll and leave requests.
- This position may be responsible for program or functional specific fiscal management and, in this capacity, may rule and advise on the allocation of expenditures.
- This position supports the CSO in overseeing the development of budgets for all existing programs or functions and new proposals, and may provide signatory approval for expenditures, contracts, subcontracts, and service agreements.
Physical Demands
This is largely a sedentary role and may sit or use PC for long periods of time. Bending, reaching, or stooping may be necessary for use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Experience
Required- Familiarity with federal advocacy and membership database applications
- Experience in scientific society/association management with progressive supervisory responsibility
- Prior management experience required
- 10 year(s): Federal government relations and grassroots advocacy engagement
Education
Required- Masters or better in Policy Studies or related field
