Description Job Summary:Supervises all undergraduate and graduate study abroad, domestic study away, and exchange programs; international initiatives, and international student and faculty scholar services. Develops and implements a strategic vision for the Center for Global Education and provides a vigorous academic grounding for experiential learning.
Essential Responsibilities:Study Abroad & Domestic Study Away
1) Manages the Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away programs for both graduate and undergraduate students. This includes streamlining and overseeing all aspects of faculty-led program development and advising students on study abroad opportunities including faculty-led programs, exchange programs, and programs through outside providers. Coordinates with the Registrar, Business Office, Health Services, and Financial Aid as needed to ensure the appropriate arrangements are made and communicated.2) Communicates with the faculty and the Office of the Registrar to ensure transfer credits and course substitutions are approved. Ensures timely receipt of international transcripts from partner institutions and outside providers for transcripts and submits transcripts to the Registrar for review and processing.3) Works closely with faculty leaders and college deans to develop, plan and implement short-term faculty-led programs during J-Term, summer term, and over spring break as part of a semester-long course, in a timely manner.4) Collaborates with faculty leaders to develop program budgets, ensures liability concerns are effectively managed through waivers, and works to maintain the highest levels of security, insurance, and best practices procedures for all international and domestic programs.5) Maintains an off-campus studies website that provides lists of study abroad and domestic study away program offerings.6) Advises students on the benefits of international study programs, potential programs in which they may enroll, and Lynchburg’s policies and procedures for studying abroad and away. 7) Assists students with the required application processes, course selection, and evaluation, review of scholarship opportunities and delivery of pre-departure orientations.8) Represents the Center for Global Education at Admitted or Prospective Student Open Houses, and presents at the Parents and Family Study Abroad Information Session as required.9) Maintains a library of information on study abroad and study away opportunities and is knowledgeable of the opportunities available.10) Conducts research for financial and scholarship opportunities, with a special focus on Boren, Mitchell, and Gilman awards.11) Maintains a database of study abroad and study away participants, exchange students, and partner institutions. 12) Works with Study Abroad and Study Away providers for on-campus promotional activities as needed. 13) Assumes (with colleagues) responsibility for working towards the University’s Strategic Goal for participation in Study Abroad and Study Away as high impact experiential learning opportunities.14) Helps prepare a semi-annual update on activities and progress toward meeting the University’s Strategic Goal for participation in Study Abroad and Study Away.15) Coordinates endowed study abroad and other experiential learning opportunities, under the purview of CGE, for the scholarship review process and notification of awards to selected recipients.16.) Works closely with offsite travel providers in coordination of itineraries and payment to travel providers in conjunction with the Business Office. 17) Provides leadership broadly across the academic and student life divisions on international student and scholar emergency situations, in conjunction with Safety and Security and the Administration.International Initiatives:18) Supports and collaborates with other departments on campus for international student initiatives.19) Works with the appropriate academic leaders to oversee the development and implementation of MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) and articulation agreements with international partners.20) Works with the appropriate academic leaders to facilitate the development and implementation of policies and procedures for international programming.21) Serves as the primary point of contact for visiting international groups and partner programs.22) Assists the Provost/Associate Provost with managing the operating budget for the Center for Global Education.23) Supports the mission and vision of the institution.24) Performs other duties as assigned.Job Requirements:
1) Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
2) Travel Abroad experience as a student, advisor, or teacher is strongly desired.
3) Previous academic advising experience desired.
4) Willingness and ability to work with students and parents in a multicultural setting.
5) Willingness and ability to work with academic, administrative offices, and faculty on campus.
6) Willingness and ability to work with study abroad providers and partner institutions.
7) Strong communication, organizational, written, and computer skills required.
8) Ability to multi-task and work in a busy environment.
9) Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and visitors on a daily basis.
10) Willingness to travel within the US or abroad as necessary (must hold a current passport for Global travel).
