Overview

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking a Director for their National Alliances team.

The individual will be responsible for developing strategic plans and overseeing the tactical implementation and execution of statewide, district and national initiatives in support of PhRMA's issues and advocacy priorities. Role responsibilities include establishing, managing, and maintaining relationships with third-party advocates, thought leaders and advocacy organizations across assigned region(s) to foster Strategic Alliances. The ideal candidate will prioritize working with colleagues across various departments (Communications, Federal, Policy, State Advocacy, etc.) and be able to effectively communicate industry priorities and issue areas of focus to internal and external audiences.

The Director will:

  • Manage state-based and national consultants; work closely with each consultant to develop and execute strategic advocacy plans for priority issues. Track progress and metrics through internal systems and ensure teams are coordinating advocacy efforts and reporting outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Develop innovative strategies and identify areas of opportunity to construct additional programs and partnerships to educate and advance priority issues.
  • Generate and maintain strategic relationships with third-party stakeholders and thought leaders. Coordinate with internal PhRMA teams and consultants to identify opportunities to facilitate desired outcomes at the state and/or federal level on priority issues.
  • Support the Deputy Vice President (DVP) of Alliance in implementing initiatives and campaigns. Provide Alliance Development updates to internal and external audiences, as requested.
  • Oversee efficient management of contracts, scopes of work, and administrative coordination of third-party grants.
  • Assist DVP and VP of Alliance with budgeting and contracting duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key success factors for this role include a proactive, self-starter personality with a strong sense of team and collaborative focus. The preferred candidate will bring substantive healthcare communications expertise and be an organized, detail-oriented, self-starter with excellent writing skills and the ability to convey content in an audience-appropriate and compelling manner. Demonstrated consensus-building, decision-making, and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment and be politically savvy, diplomatic, responsive, and mature.

Professional Experience / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Policy or related field (Master’s degree in Health Policy, Public Policy, Communications or related field preferred).
  • 6+ years of experience in issue advocacy, campaigns, and Strategic alliance development.
  • Exceptionally strong people skills; ability to easily build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders (consultants, internal teams, and external partners).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage external consultants and contracts.
  • Strong individual initiative to develop strategies and relationships with external partners.
  • Time management and ability to effectively prioritize work.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Experience / Requirements

  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Grassroots campaign background.

Potential Salary

$107,300 - $140,125 per annum. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
