Penguin Workshop Books, an imprint in the Penguin Young Readers division of Penguin Random House, is searching for a Design Assistant to assist the children’s book design team in an exciting, collaborative, fast-paced environment that also has a lot of humor and heart. In this role you will assist the Design team in an administrative and light design capacity across all imprints in the Penguin Workshop group.
Penguin Workshop’s list includes the New York Times best-selling picture book Dolly Parton’s Billy the Kid Makes It Big, Steph Curry’s I Have a Superpower, and Pura Belpré Honor winner Carlos Aponte, as well as the #1 New York Times best-selling Who Was? series. We are looking for a Design Assistant with an inclusive mindset which considers the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age, and other forms of human experience.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Providing administrative support to the Design team, including processing invoices, setting up new vendors, and archiving files
- Assisting the Design team in a design capacity with interior changes, font searches, creating PDFs, photo purchasing, inserts, stickers sheets, and designing books with established line looks
- Preparing press ready files for reprints, pick-ups, bilingual, and Spanish editions
- Creating and managing a seasonal Launch presentation deck and pitch decks
- Creating, maintaining, and strictly adhering to schedules
- Effectively communicating with Art Directors, Editors, and Artists
- Trafficking materials for approval with multiple stakeholders
- Create and post assets to the Workshop Instagram account
Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:
- A passion for books for all children
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) with emphasis on InDesign
- A portfolio that showcases strong design and typography—hand-lettering and illustration skills a plus but not required (Please note that this is not an illustration job.)
- Ability to work on multiple projects with strict timelines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
- Great people skills and communication skills
