Job Description
The Dallas Morning News is seeking a creative and ambitious visual editor who embraces photography, video and multimedia storytelling. The ideal candidate is a digitally focused leader who works well under deadlines and shows initiative.
This position is responsible for helping manage the day-to-day operations of the visuals team and ensuring that our online and print product is striking and informative through the use of photographic and video elements.
This role requires versatility in editing visuals for daily news, features, enterprise stories and audience-driven content for our various social platforms.
The daily goal is to have the team produce interesting, entertaining, inspiring, gut-wrenching and timely visuals. This includes videos and documentaries that elevate our visuals on all our platforms.
Having a collaborative mindset is key as you will work closely with your staff and editors across the room. You will report to the Director of Visual Journalism.

Our visuals team is laser-focused on North Texas, but we do it all, from major league sports to severe weather, protests and everything in between.
Essential functions

  • Coach members of the visual staff to improve technical and storytelling skills.
  • Manage visual assignments schedule.
  • Attend news and planning meetings to strengthen the value of photography and video in our storytelling process.
  • Communicate with visual staff on the field with any requests or troubleshooting.
  • Create, edit and publish online galleries and videos.
  • Work with visual staff to get their story ideas accepted and published online and in print.
  • Enforce newsroom deadlines to ensure production schedules are met.
  • Secure contracts, photo fees and usage rights for all images.
  • Interpret and implement company and departmental policies to ensure adherence to management decisions.
  • Journalistic judgment, visual creativity, innovative thinking and attention to detail are important aspects of this work.
  • Manage with inclusiveness and with a strong emphasis on diversity within staffing and coverage.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in photography, film, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Five or more years of photography experience are required.
  • Current and comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply camera operation as well as extensive knowledge of lighting all types of sets and scenes indoors and outdoors. Ability to apply this knowledge in a wide variety of situations.
