Position Summary & Description
The Department of Psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Clinical Psychology/Behavioral Health, to begin Fall 2024. This position serves both the IUP Psychology Department and IUP Graduate Medical Education Department of Indiana Regional Medical Center (IRMC).
The IUP Psychology Department of 17 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty offers a PsyD program in clinical psychology which has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1987. The program, which follows a practitioner model of training with a strong commitment to science-based education, accepts approximately 15 graduate students each year. Comparisons with other university-based PsyD programs on measures of excellence (e.g., Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology pass rates, internship placement rates, Graduate Record Examination scores, etc.) place us among the top programs in the country. The Department houses the Center for Applied Psychology, a psychological services facility, which provides opportunities for clinical training and research in therapy and assessment.
The Graduate Medical Education Department of IRMC is a vital and growing program with a primary mission of recruiting, educating, and retaining family physicians and behavioral health professionals at IRMC. Imbedded within the Family Medicine Residency Program, the goal of this position is the training of Psychology students to work within the Integrated Care model of Primary Care Behavioral Health, in the clinic office and throughout the departments of the medical center.
The candidate is directly responsible for all aspects of program administration, programming, supervision, and recruitment as well as for teaching designated courses, supervising dissertations, and facilitating collaboration, including research and grantsmanship, between IUP and IRMC. The program incorporates elements of clinical and health psychology, based on the model of research, practice, and teaching from a scientist-practitioner orientation. The candidate coordinates supervision and training, evaluates program effectiveness, and seeks opportunities to improve and expand program quality and educational experiences. The candidate develops and maintains a program budget and participates in all opportunities to develop funding streams for program maintenance and expansion. The candidate is responsible for obtaining all credentialing, licensing, and accreditation with APA. In addition to serving in the training role, the candidate will coordinate services with other program directors, administrators, and participate in relevant clinical and leadership opportunities provided in and outside the institution. This position includes a faculty position with IUP at the Assistant Professor rank.
Duties:
  • Develop and implement training curriculum including focus on ethics and state requirements.
  • Coordinate the primary care behavioral health learners with family medicine residents, faculty, and staff.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and workshops.
  • Attend resident meetings when appropriate.
  • Assist in preparation for program reviews and evaluations.
  • Participate in departmental/institutional committees.
  • Assist in recruitment of new residents.
  • Consult with other hospital departments and committees.
  • Membership and participation in Psychology professional organizations
  • Maintenance of Psychology licensure and hospital credentialing
  • Coordinate and communicate with educational institutions
  • Evaluate and provide written feedback to learners
  • Maintain Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC)
  • Coordinate program responsibilities and role of Program Coordinator to manage program administrative needs
  • Coordinate department and individual learner schedules with service delivery commitments
  • Teach one section of a graduate-level course each semester
  • Supervise student dissertations and serve on dissertation committees
  • Serve on the Clinical Psychology PsyD Clinical Training Committee, including reviewing applications, writing and grading comprehensive exam questions, and participating in regular reviews of graduate students
  • The successful candidate may be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites and/or provide instruction through distance education.
Resident Education
  • Design, implement, and coordinate curriculum in Behavioral Health/Integrated Care
  • Observe/teach residents as they provide individual health care in out-patient and in-patient hospital settings
  • Plan, present, and coordinate didactic conferences/workshops in Behavioral Health/Family Medicine
  • Coordinate the Behavioral Health longitudinal, three-year Behavioral Health curriculum
  • Assess learners' skills in the behavioral health competencies and develop and implement teaching strategies to improve them
  • Coordinate and lead Balint or Balint-type groups
  • Strengthen the doctor/patient relationship through various educational strategies
  • Teach specific skills in counseling
  • Provide strategies for treating common psychological/psychosocial problems
  • Model an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care
  • Consult with faculty and residents around specific patient problems and issues
  • Assist residents to recognize and address personal/professional issues and problems
  • Coordinate digital recording and its use as a teaching tool
  • Provide input to faculty/program director in evaluating and remediation of resident performance issues
Research
  • Develop and lead resident retreats and team-building programs
  • Co-ordinate resident research projects and events
  • Participate in and present at local, regional, and national conferences
  • Manage research requirements of Psychology learners
  • Promote publication where applicable
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Maintain a minimal caseload of patients for teaching/resident learning
  • Consult with faculty/residents on particular patient care issues
  • Supervise behavioral health specialists providing clinical services in the Family Medicine Clinic and hospital
  • Provide timely supervision as appropriate with APA and PA state and institution requirements for intern/practicum supervision
  • Maintain supervisory notes, progress reports, etc. as dictated by APA requirements
  • Review and co-sign notes and reports written by interns and practicum students
Doctoral Teaching
  • Teach one section of a graduate-level course each semester
  • Supervise student dissertations and serve on dissertation committees
  • Serve on IUP Clinical Training Committee
    1. Write and grade comprehensive exam questions
    2. Serve on retake committees, conduct remediation
    3. Serve on internship committee
    4. Review applications to PsyD program
    5. Participate in mid-year student evaluations
    6. Conduct interviews for PsyD program
    7. Develop materials for and conduct proficiency evaluations
    8. Participate in annual student and program evaluations

Position Qualifications
Required:
  • PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program with an APA-accredited or APPIC-approved internship
  • Pennsylvania license for the practice of Psychology or be eligible for licensure within the state of Pennsylvania
  • One year of post-doctoral training that includes clinical training duties, supervision, administrative and teaching responsibilities
  • Effective communication is essential, as is proficiency in content delivery through face-to-face instruction

Essential Functions
Academic faculty must have, and maintain the physical and mental abilities, communicative skills, and stamina necessary to carry out the essential functions of their positions in teaching, research, scholarship, and service. Work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve standing to a significant degree, walking for brief periods of time and may include driving requirements.
Faculty must be able to:
  • Teach courses assigned by the departmental chair on a schedule made of a combination of standard class-meeting times as determined to meet instructional needs and adhere to the requirements of the department's curriculum.
  • Teach courses for a mandated number of contact hours per week over a full semester and meet university expectations for final exams.
  • Present course material in a clear and organized manner using methodologies appropriate to the discipline.
  • Evaluate student work fairly and promptly.
  • Perform the physical requirements of laboratory, field work, studio work, or other activities outside typical classroom instruction if applicable.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the discipline through continued scholarly activity and research.
  • Participate actively in assignments necessary to advance the service and/or outreach of the department, college, and university.
