The DA Trainee is enrolled in a career-connected learning program that will prepare them to become a
Dental Assistant. Trainees are expected to work full time in clinic and complete 39 curriculum modules
over the 12-month program. All clinical skills are taught hands-on under the guidance of an experienced
dental team. The online course is comprised of textbook readings, discussion posts, skill videos, quizzes,
and more, that takes an average of 10 hours per week to complete. The online curriculum must be
completed during unpaid time, typically in evenings and on weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment in a VVHC approved
training program required.
Registration: Washington State Department of Health Registration: Maintain a current registration with
the State that is the employee’s responsibility to renew annually based on date on birth and give the
renewed registration to the supervisor at least 2 weeks prior to expiration date.
Skills: Excellent customer service, oral and written communications skills required. Compassion for
patients required. Must be able to work well in team environment. Ability to multi-task in fast-paced work
environment, with ability to anticipate future needs. Basic computer user skills required. Dental
terminology and accurate spelling ability preferred.
Physical demands: Ability to physically perform the functions of the job, including sitting, standing,
walking, lifting, carrying, bending, and reaching with or without reasonable accommodation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet and escort patients to the assigned dental chair.
- Review and update patient charts.
- Assist dental providers with required procedures, exams, and patient education per scope of
- Take x-rays as needed.
- Ensure dental exam areas are clean stocked and ready for patients.
- Clean, prepare, and sterilize instruments.
- Answer phones and schedule patients as needed.
- Observe and follow required safety protocols including handling and disposal of sharps use of
personal equipment exposure to blood borne pathogens and general safety of employees and
patients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications for moving out of Dental Assistant Trainee- Successful completion of the approved VVHC
training program and The Dental Director, SLA or designee are able to sign off that the staff member is
proficient in the above-mentioned skills.
