Montgomery College, located just north of Washington, D.C. in Maryland, has an immediate need for a full-time Dean of Student Affairs in the office of the Senior Vice President of Student Affairs, #R4957, Germantown Campus. This is an exempt, grade 37 position.

On three campuses, at off-site locations and online, over 24,000 credit students are enrolled at Montgomery College in more than 130 programs of study. The College attributes its success to the strength of its academic programs, access for students in both the U.S. and internationally to career-relevant programs, and the dedication of its faculty members to effective learning and student success. Montgomery College is under the leadership of President Dr. Jermaine F. Williams. The College was named a best community college by the New York Times and a Chronicle of Higher Education report in 2014 named Montgomery College the tenth most diverse public two-year institution in the nation.

The College has a vibrant Student Affairs Division composed of 250 counseling faculty, staff, and administrators. The Division supports students through its functions of counseling, recruitment, admissions, records and registration, enrollment management, financial aid, assessment, orientation, career services, behavioral intervention efforts, student code of conduct, services for students with disabilities, athletics, the College’s one-stop Raptor Central, and the Student Wellness Center. Student Affairs plays a leadership role in the College’s many student success efforts, including initiatives under the Achieving the Dream network.

The Dean of Student Affairs position serves as the chief campus administrator of Student Affairs with responsibility for representing the collegewide division. The Dean provides leadership for the campus, plans and implements Student Affairs initiatives, and manages designated collegewide operations.

The Dean of Student Affairs is part of a collegewide Student Affairs leadership team that administers functions and activities as part of a one-college model of service. The position currently supervises collegewide Student Access functions. These assignments may change in the future.

Contacts and interactions vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as direct interaction with State officials, community organizations, the general public, higher

education associations, campus administrative team, provost, colleagues, campus directors, faculty chairs, faculty, students, and assigned staff, for the purpose of providing and exchanging information to enhance Student Affairs.

The Dean of Student Affairs has duties that include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervises counseling faculty and staff positions at the Germantown Campus, which includes setting annual goals, individual and team meetings, conducting evaluations, problem-solving, and celebrating accomplishments. Position ensures that professional development opportunities are available for faculty and staff in the unit. Fully participates in Student Affairs meetings, campus unit heads meetings, collegewide deans’ meetings, and other collegewide and campus meetings. Coordinates campus Student Affairs, including unit leadership team meetings, coordination of campus and collegewide initiatives, and programs under the division of Student Affairs.
  • Plan, implement, and administer strategic goals, objectives and initiatives, as well as develop policies and procedures related to Student Affairs. Develop and implement system for assessment of operations to include processes for feedback and improvement; make recommendations for improvements based on assessment.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student groups/organizations on current/proposed programs and services to facilitate and enhance Student Affairs.
  • Effectively manage fiscal resources including assigned budgets.
  • Provide leadership for student disciplinary process, Student Code of Conduct, judicial proceedings, and behavioral intervention team.
  • Serve as an advocate for students.
  • Schedule, assign, inspect, and review work of assigned staff to ensure work is performed according to established standards; conduct performance evaluations, formal and informal coaching, and disciplinary action.
  • Identify, develop and recommend professional development needs/opportunities, and coordinate/conduct training.
  • Conduct needs assessment and feasibility studies related to projects and initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters’ degree in discipline related to departments and disciplines in the area.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education, preferably with some of this at a community college.
  • Knowledge of higher education programs and curricula.
  • Knowledge of structures, policies, trends, and developments in higher education as it relates to community colleges.
  • Knowledge of Student development principles and practices as applied to a large community college, methods and techniques of developing and implementing successful programs and services to support student success.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations to include, but not limited to, FERPA, ADA, and Title IX.
  • Skill in preparing and administering budgets.
  • Skill in making presentations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement campus and collegewide Student Affairs programs and ability to provide leadership to the College regarding such activities; to direct, develop and guide the work of staff.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others within and outside of the institution.
  • Ability to provide advice and counsel to others, as well as correspondence and reports.
  • Excellent leadership, organization, presentation, and customer service skills as well as the ability to lead, instruct, train, guide, and motivate others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to identify, develop, and implement short/long-term strategic goals and objectives.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require an employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate degree in education, counseling, student personnel services, or related field. In academia, a doctorate is the preferred degree for a dean since it provides academic credibility with faculty.
  • Successful experience as a Student Affairs leader in a community college.
  • Successful experience as a Student Affairs leader in a multi-campus environment.
  • Successful experience working with both faculty and staff.
  • Successful experience leading institution-wide transformational student success initiatives.
  • Successful experience developing policy and procedures to guide student success initiatives.

Hiring range: $110,133 - $151,447. Salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
