JOB SUMMARY

Under direction of the Director of Information Technology performs a full range of activities required to support databases running on enterprise-level database management system (DBMS) software. Maintaining various applications and database systems.


CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Database Application Administrator allocable to this position will be responsible for logical and physical database design, implementation, and maintenance of databases. Incumbents are responsible for ensuring that Department and/or Agency-wide data and technical requirements, including data definition, data structure, documentation, operational guidelines, and data protection are met. Incumbents possess knowledge of the principles and practices of multiple information technology disciplines, including database design, application development, network, hardware, systems software, and applications software. Incumbents have the ability to apply database management concepts and techniques. They apply knowledge of new and emerging data management technologies to assess existing database designs, data architectures, database technologies, and platforms and recommend changes that will enhance data management capabilities and meet future requirements.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

· Supports database and application environments.

o EHR System

o Data Warehouse

o Training System Application Management

o Payroll System Application Management

o Management of Customize Database Application

· Selects or assists in the selection of new database management systems including design, feasibility studies, cost estimates, impact analysis, data conversion functions, and reduction of redundant data.

· Installs and configures database management software, including upgrades, patches, and third-party tools. Maintains database management software and related software.

· Assists in the selection of new application systems by reviewing database design, database technologies, hardware specifications, and configuration and deployment plans for performance, maintainability, scalability, operations impact, and conformance to architectural standards.

· Performs database backup and database recovery.

· Manages disk space for database systems.

· Conducts capacity planning.

· Performs preventive maintenance tasks and database tuning.

· Analyzes database requirements. Evaluates, designs, and implements database systems.

· Develops or validates deployment scripts for database software changes and deploys databases and database changes in testing, training, preproduction, and production environments.

· Writes stored procedures, functions, triggers, and batch jobs in the database system. Writes scripts used in database system management.

· Analyzes query plans and monitors database system performance to identify and address performance problems.

· Creates and manages indexes to support application performance requirements.

· Analyzes database code written by developers to assess impact on the database system and application performance.

· Designs and implements database security for applications, including creating database users, designing and assigning roles, and granting and denying database privileges.

· Responds to database outages or performance problems and restores normal operations.

· Monitors data quality, data integrity, and database availability.

· Analyzes and resolves database problems.

· Writes policies and procedures pertaining to database standards, management, security and maintenance.

· Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls including data backup/recovery specifications.

· Participates in the formulation of database strategies.

· Participates in evaluation of new technologies in database management.

· Assists in the development of database system related standards and methodologies and the selection of a standard DBA toolset.

· Acts as a technical specialist on database concepts and functional capabilities.

· May develop or assist in the development of programs for data extraction, transformation, and loading.

· May serve as liaison to vendors for negotiating license and support.

· May assist in the administration and support of application servers.

· May participate on a team of developers engaged in the overall database design, query tuning, creating indexes, and in the creation of triggers and stored procedures.

· All other Duties as assigned

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a closely related field with four (4) years of experience performing progressively responsible information technology functions, one (1) year of which must include planning, designing, implementing, and administering of server-based, scalable databases.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

· Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

· Valid automobile liability insurance

 

Travel and Time Requirements:

· This position requires travel locally, statewide and nationally as needed

· This position may require off-hour and weekend support as needed

· Planning and Organization and Project Management: The Database Application Administrator juggles several projects, people and problems simultaneously. It is essential that they be organized in the present and be looking ahead to prepare for what’s coming next; works in an organized manner with strong attention to detail; prioritizes and plans work activities; ability to effectively manage overlapping projects and deadlines; ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; integrates changes smoothly; sets goals and objectives; ability to manage high performance projects

Experience:

Whatever the case may be, there are several duties that most Database Application Administrators do, regardless of where they work. These include the following:

  • Configure network hardware such as servers, routers, and switches
  • Implement, maintain various enterprise applications
  • Upgrade, repair, and maintain Database Servers
  • Troubleshoot various Database issues
  • Assist network architects with the design of network models whenever needed.
  • Deploy and update company-wide software
  • Manage servers and operating systems
  • Implement security measures
  • Manage physical and cloud network storage

Skills That All Good Database Administrators Have in Common

Critical Thinking – Network admins will need to explore and solve various problems logically and consistently. Even if you don’t know the solution right away, the ability to analyze the situation and think critically will go a long way in figuring out a solution.

Time Management – Database Administrators will have to juggle several projects at the same time, dealing with people and solving various problems. This automatically means that they should be able to keep themselves organized and make sure that everything is balanced.

Communication Skills – Good interpersonal skills are of utmost importance for network admins. Since they work with a broad range of people, from network engineers to end-users, being able to bridge the gaps between these groups of people will go a long way.

Always Look To Learn and Evolve – The IT field is notorious for its quick development and change. Database Administrators can’t afford to not stay on top of the latest trends and demands if they wish not to become obsolete.
