JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a junior Database Administrator to join our Information Technology team. The ideal candidate will bring value to the team by utilizing their base level understanding of and experience in database administration to oversee the daily tasks of NCSBN’s database management team.
Reporting to the Associate Director of IT, Application Development & Database Management, the Database Administrator I will work closely alongside the Associate Director of IT and the Sr. Database Administrator to ensure optimum performance, reliability, recoverability, security and stability across all NCSBN database environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with and supports the design, development, installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of corporate database environments utilizing a cloud-first approach.
- Aids in the management of databases hosted on-premises and hosted on cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and cloud platform-as-a-service (PaaS) products.
- Installs database software service packs, security updates, and cumulative updates as necessary. Partners with senior database administration staff to identify and mitigate risk to eliminate or minimize impact on the organization. Provides continuous improvement analysis and action.
- Follows and enforces rules and guidelines for the development of SQL objects. Optimizes indexes and tables. Maintains database dictionaries and schema documentation. Assists with the design and deployment of data table structures, triggers, functions, stored procedures and views. Creates queries and reports. Resolves database access and performance issues.
- Executes strategies to maximize database security, availability, compliance, and performance including replication, archiving, log shipping, backup, recovery, and high availability. Assists with the development of database disaster recovery processes and procedures. Participates in disaster recovery testing. Monitors and conducts performance tuning of database systems.
- Participates in project team meetings with business analysts, quality assurance analysts, developers, and senior database administration staff to determine requirements for database design. Partners with senior database administration staff to determine procedural changes and/or modifications to the database environments. Facilitates system integration assistance through database design. Assists with database application upgrades.
- Collaborates with the infrastructure team and senior database administration staff on database server and network issues. Communicates promptly and proactively.
- Follows and enforces database security guidelines. Enforces appropriate database access control levels. Adheres to database security standards and guidelines. Assists with audits.
- Maintains database server and application tools that support the database environment. Evaluates and makes recommendations of new database products in accordance with the needs of the business.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science/information systems or equivalent and applicable job experience required.
- Minimum three years of progressive information technology experience.
- Minimum two years of on-premises and/or cloud database administration experience.
- Knowledge of database backups, recovery, security, and integrity of database servers in cloud and on-premises environments
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of application development lifecycle and formal methodologies; process engineering; and project management concepts.
- Experience with variety of systems and package implementations, conversions, migrations, etc.
- Technical expertise must include: MS SQL Server, T-SQL, SSMS; Windows desktop and server operating systems; Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts; Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- The following are preferred but not required: SSIS, SSRS, SSAS; Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance; PowerBI, SharePoint, .NET/C#; Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks; Azure certifications.
