Reporting to the IT Manager, this is a critical hands-on role responsible for configuring and tuning the UNIX systems, Cache/Iris/Iris databases, disk management, software deployment, upgrade and patching, as well as backup and recovery. This role serves as the primary resource for all activities related to the implementation, support and administration of various Database Management Systems (including Epic Cache/Iris) on various Operating Systems and Hardware platforms. Provide secondary level support for Operating Systems and Utilities on these hardware platforms. These databases are integral components of software applications that are critical to the delivery of patient care and business operations across the continuum.
1. Develops procedures and performs maintenance activities to monitor database operations including disk utilization, processor utilization and response time; develops standards and procedures related to database systems and monitors compliance; identifies areas requiring follow up; takes corrective action as necessary.
2. Analyzes database requirements of various applications; recommends solutions which require definition of the physical structure and functional design of databases; develops procedures and monitors compliance for data security and backup/recovery specifications; prepares detailed specifications and entity relationship diagrams (ERD); ensures interoperability of databases; coordinates the installation of new applications.
3. Develops procedures to keep databases up and functioning; recovers databases from hardware and application failures; provides primary support for databases when requested by internal and external teams.
4. Manages storage associated with Epic Cache/Iris databases and Windows ancillary applications.
5. Conducts detailed database analysis; prepares activity reports on database usage; recommends solutions to improve performance or solve problems; installs DBMS (database management system) software and other utilities; projects long-range requirements for database administration.
6. Maintains and upgrades DBMS to the current supported level; coordinates downtime for maintenance activities and database upgrades with users and help desk to minimize disruption of business operations.
7. Actively participates in configuration and installation of new applications, upgrades, and enhancements; recommends alternate solutions as necessary. This includes managing and assisting in creation of Epic environments, performing routine tasks, upgrading environments, installing updates and working with other members of the IT team to meet project goals and deadlines.
8. Maintains all documentation related to databases and license needs, provides common procedures to be carried out by operations and/or help desk personnel, relative to database availability and integrity.

1. Level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
2. Minimum of two years experiences in administering relational DBMS on Unix, Linux, or Windows operating environments. Database Administration (DBA) certification in one or many Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server or Intersystem Cache/Iris/Iris (Epic EMR system) or an equivalent level of knowledge (attained by appropriate experience) required.
3. Minimum of five years' experience in information systems as application developer and/or analyst required.
4. Epic Cache/Iris Database Management certification preferred or must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
5. Experience in installing and configuring RDBMS Management Utilities preferred.
6. Experience with supporting and designing databases as standalone databases or within database farms.
7. Experience with design, support, and maintaining data warehouses or DataMart's.
8. Experience and certifications with Epic EMR systems preferred. This includes the Epic Cache/Iris/Iris database certification, and Clarity/Cogito/Caboodle certifications.
9. Knowledge and understanding of technical specifications of the hardware components and features of the operating systems of assigned systems.
10. Analytical skills necessary to evaluate services, products and needs, to analyze database systems, to devise internal controls and to prepare software installation plans.
11. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
12. Interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with users, vendors, external agencies and other employees of the hospital.
13. Verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively communicate database issues with users, vendors and other employees of the hospital.
14. Must be prepared to work long hours during crisis situations and be available for technical assistance during off hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Requires very little physical effort. Rarely required to walk or stand for prolonged periods. May require occasional lifting or moving of light weight material, or rarely lifting or moving average weight materials.
2. The flow of work and character of duties involves normal mental and visual attention.
