Description
The Integrated Data and Analytics (IDA) department is seeking a Data Scientist to generate actionable insights in support of key county strategies. This position will work with stakeholders from around the county to scope, develop, and execute projects. In some cases, the data is readily available in well-known, large databases or feeds, in other cases the Data Scientist will work collaboratively with stakeholders and data engineers to establish new data collection methods or data pipelines with other areas of the county where they have not yet been established.
This position will create reports or presentations that tell a story to technical and non-technical audiences, manage multiple priorities, and work with multiple stakeholders to deliver on-time, high-quality artifacts.
IDA is led by the county's Chief Data Officer and two managers. IDA is composed of data engineers, Data Scientists, and data strategists. This position reports to the Data and Analytics Manager.
Effective December 31, 2023, there will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to the minimum and maximum of the range.
Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit .
Location and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with flexibility.
While this position is designated as remote, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:
- Collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders to help conceptualize and operationalize their data needs.
- Identify new datasets and approaches for mining existing data.
- Analyze, interpret, and present data to meet the needs of multiple stakeholders and diverse audiences.
- Query, transform, and clean data from a variety of state and county databases, for use in data science and analytics projects.
- Develop data science, advanced analytics, and complex reporting projects from concept to production, based on business need.
- Execute ad-hoc analyses, ongoing models, and report development to solve various problems and meaningfully impact county strategies.
- Advance practices related to report automation, data processes, and data-ops.
- Support data informed decision making and culture through data science initiatives, user adoption plans and data literacy related efforts.
Need to have:

- Bachelor's degree or higher in any field and a minimum of two courses in data science, research methods, data analytics, or statistics and four years or more of relevant data analyst, data science, or applied research experience.

- Master's degree or higher in one of the fields listed below and two years or more of relevant data analyst, data science, or applied research experience.
- Ph.D. degree in data science, data analytics, business analytics, business administration, public administration/policy, research/evaluation methods, statistics, behavioral/social science, public health, computer science/MIS, management science, urban/city planning, or any field appropriate to the area of specialization.
