Job Description
The Data Privacy Counsel must have a Data Privacy legal background and be able to demonstrate strong experience and interest in the areas of Data Privacy and security. This candidate will report through our legal organization and will work with a multicultural and global scope. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate leadership behaviors, which include adhering to CorVel’s core values and foundational beliefs.
This is hybrid role in our Irvine, CA office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Build and maintain strong and trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, with legal and business teams, and interact with clients, as needed.
Negotiate directly and provide oversight and support to the negotiation by others of Data Privacy contractual provisions in complex agreements with clients and third-party suppliers, data processing agreements, data transfer agreements and data protection clauses.
Partner and interact with key business stakeholders and senior individuals within Legal to ensure Data Privacy issues are considered at the outset of new services, offerings, projects, products, and initiatives.
Monitor changes to laws, regulatory expectations, and enforcement trends, and collaborate with outside compliance counsel to assess their effect on CorVel’s business.
Work closely with Cyber Security and Trust Services Department on vendor management process.
Draft and negotiate vendor and customer contract provisions related to the collection, processing, and sharing of personal information and manage data inventory reviews.
Collaborate with, support, and educate key business team members on Data Privacy expectations during product development and improvement cycles.
Develop and maintain long-term privacy compliance strategy, including policies, procedures, and guidance documentation.
Own and keep under constant review all of CorVel’s data protection compliance arrangements, including updating relevant policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- 10+ years of experience with 5+ years of direct work experience in a global Data Privacy function with expertise in global data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, and CCPA).
- Licensed to practice law in the United States.
- IAPP privacy certification (CIPP/US, CIPM, etc.) is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in structuring and providing practical Data Privacy legal guidance to business units and corporate functions.
- Experience negotiating, drafting, and revising BAAs, DPAs, DSAs, and other privacy-specific agreements.
- Knowledge of and experience in monitoring privacy trends and developments and translating those into actionable requirements.
- Experience working and managing outside vendor, OneTrust.
- Adapts nimbly to changing needs within the business.
- Ability to synthesize complex legal Data Privacy analysis into clear recommendations to the business.
- Ability to prioritize and make decisions, and possess a high level of common sense, including the ability to spot risks after they materialize.
- Demonstrated command of Data Privacy, data security, and related laws and regulations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Travel required as needed (usually <5%).
- Must have the ability to effectively work with others remotely, conduct privacy reviews and engage in contract negotiation.
PAY RANGE:
CorVel uses a market based approach to pay and our salary ranges may vary depending on your location. Pay rates are established taking into account the following factors: federal, state, and local minimum wage requirements, the geographic location differential, job-related skills, experience, qualifications, internal employee equity, and market conditions. Our ranges may be modified at any time.
For leveled roles (I, II, III, Senior, Lead, etc.) new hires may be slotted into a different level, either up or down, based on assessment during interview process taking into consideration experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role. The level may impact the salary range and these adjustments would be clarified during the offer process.
Pay Range: $186,198 – $290,203
