The State University of New York College of Optometry is a leader in education, research, and patient care. All classrooms, research facilities and the University Eye Center, which is one of the largest optometric outpatient facilities in the nation, are located on 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in midtown Manhattan. An extension center at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse New York is in the planning phase.
The Center for Teaching and Learning ( CTL) is a new initiative aimed at supporting mental health and wellness, student academic success, and faculty teaching development. The Center will play a significant part in the College's initiative to establish the Upstate Extension Center.
Position Description
The Curriculum and Instructional Design Specialist will report to the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning ( CTL) and will work closely with faculty and support staff to enhance the design, delivery, and assessment of the curriculum. The Specialist will assist faculty with course design and Instructional approaches to support a HyFlex learning environment ensuring all students meet the desired learning outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with faculty to analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate instructional materials and assignments tailored for diverse learning modalities, including HyFlex lectures, small groups, laboratories, and clinical teaching.
- Work with faculty to review course learning objectives and outcomes, ensuring alignment with program goals, course descriptions, and what is being taught and assessed.
- Manage the ExamSoft assessment software and provide technical assistance to faculty and staff.
- Work with faculty to enhance assessments and student feedback, focusing on item development and rubrics, alignment with learning outcomes, categorizations, and analysis.
- Assist with overseeing assessment scheduling and proctoring.
- Collaborate closely with the Learning Specialist to train and assist Teaching Assistants, fostering clear communication and alignment with the instructor of record and ensure seamless operations for the delivery of educational supports to both students and faculty.
- Organize and provide workshops and training materials for faculty, residents, doctoral students, and staff as identified.
- Work closely with Learning Specialist and Information Technology Services to provide information and technical support to students and faculty in the use of educational technologies and tools including the Learning Management System, Zoom, ExamSoft, Poll Everywhere, MS PowerPoint, etc. to support course delivery and improve class participation, engagement, and learning.
- Work closely with the Learning Specialist to develop and manage an online platform dedicated to housing resources and training materials.
- Manage, update and maintain instructional program materials and records to monitor and evaluate services provided; support and participate in scholarship of teaching.
- Assist with the collection of curricular data for institutional and state-level reporting.
- Stay abreast in pedagogical trends and technologies; identify resources to continually enrich teaching and learning.
- Works closely with the Learning Specialist and Mental Health Practitioner to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Work closely with the Registrar's Office to manage the course catalog (including website content), curriculum mapping and program reviews; may assist with academic calendar planning.
- Participate in the development of department goals and objectives and assessment of resource needs.
- Collaborate with and serve as a resource to the Curriculum Committee and college community.
- Participate and support the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Affairs, and campus-wide curricular initiatives and projects.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A master's degree in Instructional Design or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- At least three years of relevant experience in course development and academic project management.
- Experience within a higher education setting required
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Some travel may be required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with graduate or professional learners in the healthcare or optometry education field
- Knowledge of the Universal Design of Learning (UDL), instructional systems development theory and practice, adult learning principles, teaching methodologies, training and development techniques, as well as learning facilitation strategies.
- Experience conducing workshops and producing diverse learning materials, including print, graphics, audio, video, animation, and multimedia formats.
- Experience with Examsoft, D2L Brightspace, Zoom and other educational technology is desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is desirable.

Minimum of $75,000. SUNY Optometry provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a generous benefit package. 15 days of annual leave to start and 13 paid holidays per year.
