Job description

General Summary

Oversees and controls all operations within the plant; manipulates centralized computer which electronically controls the cement making process including crushing systems, grinding systems, kiln system, fuel systems, etc.; observes and records equipment readings; prepares and maintains various reports; communicates with people regarding various aspects of the cement manufacturing operation.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)

  • The primary purpose of the Control Room Operator is to ensure that the plant equipment is operated in a manner that is safe for personnel, protects the environment and equipment, and maximizes profitability.
  • Operates, from a central Control Room via computer, the crushing system, grinding systems, fuel systems, kiln and cooler systems, material transport systems, etc.
  • Monitors and adjusts computer set points to ensure the entire cement plant is operating in a safe and effective manner.
  • Maintains records on the kiln and milling operations.
  • Responsible for documenting all significant occurrences and developments.
  • Observes and records various data points, inventory levels, production, fuel usage, lab data, etc.
  • Coordinates with Shift Foreman and Lab personnel to ensure proper mixes, material placement, product quality, etc.
  • Coordinates with material handling and mobile operators, system operators, mechanics, electricians, etc.
  • Learns and understands all Company safety rules, obeying them and using appropriate safety equipment and checks with supervisor if there is a question as to safe procedure; keeps up to date on all changes to safety rules. Must demonstrate commitment to the safety of all persons and property by abiding by all safety rules and regulations.
  • Immediately reports all unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly Control Room / workspace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Leads, Foreman, Supervisors or Management.

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1-year prior experience as a cement plant Control Room Operator or trainee is required, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years prior experience in a cement plant is required.
  • Requires knowledge of cement plant operations and System Operator positions, as well as all equipment and machinery including the crushing system, raw and finish systems, kiln and cooler systems.
  • Must be able to work independently and, at times, make independent decisions.
  • Must possess the ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, as well as communicate clearly with plant personnel.
  • Must react quickly and confidently to the most unusual situation with positive correcting or adjusting actions, while remaining calm in stressful and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to exercise common sense in the operation and safety of all equipment and vehicles.
  • Must be able to complete assigned tasks independently with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and make independent decisions.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team, as well as to complete assigned tasks independently with little direct supervision; to work in a physically challenging and sometimes stressful environment; to take direction from supervisor and to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work overtime, (in excess of 40 hours per week), as necessary, in order to complete assigned tasks, special projects or accomplish Company goals.
  • Ability to work shift work and a rotating schedule which changes each week to cover 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, days and nights, etc.
