Our EMI team In Oakland, CA is always looking for great talent and especially people who enjoy solving difficult problems in a creative way. Engineering Mechanics and Infrastructure (EMI) applies engineering mechanics, materials science, numerical simulation, innovative technologies, and collective expertise to solve our clients' toughest problems in an inspiring work environment that nurtures life-long learning and growth. A successful candidate for EMI may work on projects related to buildings, bridges, pipelines, nuclear facilities, tanks, rail vehicles, rotating equipment, precision observatory structures, and other non-building structures and systems.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Perform structural analyses under supervision.
- Design new structures and repairs of existing structures.
- Perform linear and nonlinear finite element analyses, under supervision, using programs such as Abaqus and ANSYS.
- Work on routine problems independently and on project teams.
- Assist in preparation of proposals, letters, reports, calculations, drawings, specifications, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
- Review work by technicians, draftsmen, and others assisting the project team.
- Conduct field inspections.
- Conduct engineering calculations, using software such as Matlab and Mathcad.
What You'll Need:
- M.S. or PhD in Structural Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or similar fields with emphasis on structural analysis, structural dynamics, and engineering mechanics.
- Minimum of 5 -10 years of professional experience in structural engineering or engineering mechanics, preferably for non-building structures and/or critical infrastructure.
- Strong background in structural analysis, structural dynamics, structural design, and engineering mechanics is required.
- Knowledge and understanding of probabilistic concepts such as risk and reliability, uncertainty quantification, random vibrations, and/or stochastic processes.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English are preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license required.
- Experience with commercial finite element analysis computer programs, such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, and/or LS-DYNA, .
- Proficiency with use of computer programming and scripting tools for engineering computations, such as Mathcad, MATLAB, Python, and/or VBA.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in large multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to travel.
- May be required to work on projects that are subject to passing a security clearance check.
- Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Anticipated annual base salary: $83,000 - $125,000. This range is a good-faith estimate provided pursuant to the California Pay Transparency Law.
The actual salary offered may vary from the range, as permitted by the California Equal Pay Transparency Law, and will be based on several factors including the candidate's experience and qualifications, education, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base salary is a part of SGH's industry-leading Total Compensation package. Our Total Compensation package includes base salary, pay for extra hours worked, an annual bonus program, generous paid time off, and health and wellness benefits with a special emphasis on substantial SGH contributions to medical insurance premiums and SGH's Profit Sharing & 401(k) Plan.
