The big picture
Thorstad Companies is seeking a Renewables Project Manager/Estimator. This position will be responsible for providing leadership and managing the operational and financial aspects of Construction Projects to be completed on schedule, within budget and in compliance with Company safety and quality procedures and policies. The Renewables Project Manager/Estimator is also responsible for fostering relationships with new and potential clients, identifying potential leads and developing project proposals and estimates. As a member of the leadership team, this position also acts as a cultural manager by ensuring that the company's fundamental values and beliefs are followed and maintained.
  • Direct, plan and manage Construction Projects ensuring projects are safe, financially successful, and quality driven.
    • Promote and comply with all Company safety policies and procedures
    • Ensure project is built within the scope of the contract by reading, editing, creating, understanding and correlating contract documents with the scope of work. (designs, specs, schedule, budget, etc.)
    • Oversee and manage the project budget, including job cost control, pay applications, forecasting and change orders. Works with client to find cost savings areas or to prevent change orders.
    • Serve as primary point of contact with the owner/owner's site representatives, facilitating meetings, determining expectations, resolving contract disputes, and communicating project updates and changes.
    • Ensure the project is in compliance with federal and state safety regulations, the site-specific safety plan and client requirements through collaboration with Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, on site Safety Coordinators, and project team.
    • Ensure through others that the project is productive and efficient, best practices are communicated and enforced, and the project is technically and quality compliant striving towards superior project execution.
    • Facilitate initial teambuilding efforts at project commencement and ensure continuous teambuilding, training and mentoring efforts are on-going throughout the duration of the project.
    • Ensure proper implementation and application of the project QA/QC with assistance from site management

  • Identify leads and foster relationship with new and prospective clients.
    • Develop and maintain knowledge of the power and energy generation market, in order to engage in electrical, civil and structural discussions.

  • Responsible for gathering, calculating and compiling data for use in estimates and preparing routine estimates
    • Attend project meetings, pre-bid meetings, and perform site investigations as assigned.
    • Conduct plan and estimate reviews for projects.
    • Complete pre-construction survey and other preliminary documents.
    • Solicit subcontractor and/or supplier quotations or scheduling input as required for the project and award contracts to selected subcontractors
    • Coordinate with other members of the team for completion of the proposal.
    • Create, read, edit and understand contracts, subcontracts, service agreements, purchase agreements and correlate quotes to the main scope and contract.
    • Review all bids for their entirety and compliance with contract.
    • Establish labor needs and confer with Human Resources.
    • Develop and complete project schedule.
  • Provide leadership to direct reports and project site teams
    • Leads and manages project activities through employees and/or hired organizations.
    • Ensures the project follows company policies and state and federal employment regulations.
    • Develop a high performance, customer-oriented work team, through hiring, motivating, coaching, appraising, and rewarding, and addressing under performers, complaints or personnel conflicts
    • Conduct employee assessment, review and feedback as needed and on a semi-annual basis to provide mentoring, coaching and rewards for continued employee development.
  • Build relationships and champion company culture
    • Daily, set exemplary standards of ethics and stewardship of company resources, function as a team player and help maintain trust and communication.
    • Strives to exhibit and apply company values to all interactions and build/maintain relationships with company stakeholders (employees, clients, subcontractors, community members, regulatory bodies, etc.).
    • Shares knowledge of lessons learned, company values, and employees' skills and abilities.
    • Ensures direct reports and the site team utilize professionalism while interfacing with vendors, subcontractors, landowners and other community members.

Required qualifications
  • 15+ years construction experience
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external constituencies from varied and diverse backgrounds, including line and executive staff, and persons representing industry, corporate, government, and community-based organizations
  • Able to adapt communication style to the speaker and possess a high degree of active listening skills
  • Must demonstrate emotional intelligence; being aware of the motions of self and others
  • Strong interpersonal, team building, customer service, communication, problem solving, planning and leadership skills.
  • Detail orientated with the ability and organization to manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Current driver's license
  • Must be able to speak and understand English
  • Requires ability to read plans

Preferred qualifications
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to operate equipment such as: telehandler, mini excavator, back hoe and skid steer a plus
