Duke's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has an exciting hybrid opportunity as a Communications Strategist at 311 Trent Drive, Durham, North Carolina.

 

Occupational Summary
In partnership with the Department Chair and senior management, compose, edit, manage, and execute internal and external communications, establish standards, and execute reputational management tasksfor the Department with Duke's School of Medicine and Duke Health. This includes producing and designing materials for department initiatives, web pages, department-wide meeting materials, recruitment, information communicated to faculty, and materials developed to showcase departmental successes to our internal and external constituents. Photography, graphic design, and videography skills are a plus.
Work Performed
Work with the Chief Administrator/direct supervisor and other internal constituencies for the development and execution of a communications plan that builds visibility and public image for the department and demonstrates the vision of the Chairman.

 

 Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with divisions and provide guidance related to content for websites, social media, publications, and other communication channels to ensure consistency of style, freshness, and usability of content in support of strategic and operational goals. 

 Depending on the unit and project, guidance may include consultation, editing, writing, and development or oversight of multimedia content development.

 Plan the department look for all internet, intranet, videos, events, and seminars using the established institutional branding standards. Produce bi-monthly newsletters for the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) programs, maintain their websites, and develop other communication materials using traditional and non-traditionalmediums and networks to promote departmental objectives and success.

 Create and maintain a unified voice through print and electronic media in collaboration with Departmental leaders. 

 Attend department and division events to take photographs and videos for communication and social media.

 Develop and manage social media strategy for the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Doctorate programs. 

 Manage and advance the department's reputation through social media and analytics, including Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Collaborate with student graduate assistants on social media content and posts for the OTD and DPT programs. Assist the social media manager with DPT content.

 

 Collaborate with vendors, including web designers, printers, graphic designers, photographers, and freelance writers, as needed for strategic projects.

 Provide input for the department's strategic plan, reporting, and communication approach.

 Collaborate with internal staff to communicate DPT and OTD events, messages, calendar dates, programs, etc.

 Manage and produce digital content for IPE (office) digital monitors to ensure they are current and accurate.

 Assist with digital communication slides for meetings, including weekly grand rounds and monthly slides for faculty meetings.

 Attend department-level meetings and synthesize global communications. 

 Interview division faculty and staff to promote and feature newsworthy or prestigious events and awards.

 Interview incoming faculty and staff for biographical information to share with the Department.

 Oversee departmental library of materials, digital resources, and websites, including external communications contacts and services, logos, photographs, graphics, videos, illustrations, artwork, projects, and documents.

 Coordinate with the Office of News & Communications on media inquiries and releases. 

 Develop and implement the strategic marketing plans for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program, including website management, printed and digital materials for admissions, and continuing education programs for both programs. 

 Ensure all communications reflect the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's commitment/support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

 Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Work requires communications, strategic planning, analytical, and organizational skills generally needed through completing a bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, or a related field.

 

Experience

 

Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, and communications, with excellent writing skills or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management. Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills to manage and coordinate various tasks. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.
