Job description

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is the number one school of public health in the U.S. and the oldest and largest, public health school in the world. Through education, research, and practice, its The Bloomberg American Health Initiative works to tackle critical, 21st century challenges to public health in the United States, aiming to improve health and save lives nationwide. The Initiative has five focus areas: addiction and overdose; environmental challenges; food systems for health; risks to adolescent health; and violence. The Bloomberg American Health Initiative seeks a Communications Officer to lead a multi-channel communications strategy to externally promote the Initiative's research, practice, and educational portfolios across owned channels, social media, earned media, and events. The Communications Officer will architect an overarching strategy with the Initiative program leads and the School's Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing. This position will be responsible for executing the strategy, tactics and plans and tracking results, with the support of a Communications Associate, vendors, and the broader initiative and Communications and Marketing team. The Officer and Initiative team will work directly with faculty, students, and staff on developing, writing, editing, designing and integrating content.


The Communications Officer will report to the School's Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing as a member of the School's award-winning Communications and Marketing team in the Office of External Affairs, with a dotted line to the Initiative's Associate Director and Director. The Officer will also have close contact with the communications team leaders at Bloomberg Philanthropies to ensure priorities and deliverables are aligned and promoted in a coordinated manner.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, refine, and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to promote the innovative work and policy agenda of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. The plan will include proactive promotion of the educational, research, and practice elements of the Initiative across owned channels, national, regional and local media, social media, events, and other platforms.
  • Oversee and directly contribute to the creation of original content across a variety of channels and platforms, including articles, news releases, social media posts, a weekly newsletter, the American Health podcast, and others as agreed upon.
  • Manage media relations for the Initiative, including proactive outreach to reporters, responding to media inquiries, coordinating opportunities with faculty, and helping faculty prepare for those opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with Initiative faculty and students to learn about their work and find ways to highlight their research and impact.
  • Write, design, edit and produce reports, news releases and media advisories, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures and other documents to capture the breadth and depth of the Initiative's work.
  • Write and refine op-eds, talking points, key messages, media pitches, presentations, and other communications and marketing materials in collaboration with faculty, fellows, leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Support the promotion and dissemination of Initiative reports and publications, including developing and monitoring production schedules.
  • Develop, manage, and implement the communications budget for the Initiative.
  • Develop and manage communications contracts and agreements, including support from vendors.
  • Lead communications strategy and coordinate media relations outreach plans for events, live, hybrid and virtual, including the annual Bloomberg American Health Summit, connecting closely on goals, themes, key audiences, and outreach strategies across the Initiative and with Bloomberg Philanthropies.
  • Lead efforts to measure results and report on the impact of the Initiative's communications strategies to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with the University Branding Guidelines of JHU Use of Name Guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in communications or related field.
  • Five years related experience in communication, marketing or related field; including experience working as a journalist or with journalists, developing pitches and telling stories, working with digital and social media platform.  Experience leading a communications team or communications strategy for a large-scale campaign or initiative.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong interest in public health and public health policy.
  • Experience developing and implementing a strategic communications plan within a large complex organization.
  • Experience in policy communications or advocacy.
  • Experience managing high profile communications with donors.
  • Experience effectively managing contracts with and deliverables from vendors.
  • Experience working on public health issues, including at least one of the 5 issues in the focus of the Initiative.
  • Experience communicating about scientific and research evidence to a wide audience.
  • Experience leading and mentoring others.
  • Strong interest in public health and public health policy.
  • Experience developing and implementing a strategic communications plan within a large complex organization.
  • Experience in policy communications or advocacy.
  • Experience managing high profile communications with donors.
  • Experience effectively managing contracts with and deliverables from vendors.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
