Duties and Responsibilities :

Bowie State University seeks an experienced communications professional to support the President’s communication and Outreach efforts. This position reports to the President and is responsible for researching, drafting and editing the President’s written and oral presentations, reports, speeches, and other documents as well as providing direct support to the President in meetings and events. The successful candidate will exercise sound editorial judgment and work discreetly on confidential or sensitive matters.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties

· Takes the lead in conceptualizing, researching content, fact-checking, and drafting presentations, reports, speeches and other communications to be delivered by the President;· Writes, edits, and produces accurate, compelling, high-quality content for the President’s communications, including speeches, presentations and talking points, ensuring proper tone, cadence and voice for the intended audience;· Works efficiently with attention to detail in a dynamic, deadline-driven writing environment with multiple projects and quick turnarounds;· Collaborates with University Relations and Marketing Department as needed to ensure messaging is aligned with the University’s mission, strategic plan, and key initiatives;· Strategically uses internal and external communication platforms, including social media, to promote the President’s messaging regarding the University’s goals and initiatives, and successes in a clear manner to a wide and diverse audience;· Collaborates with campus subject-matter experts and content owners to keep talking points current, accurate, and strategically aligned;· Stays abreast of latest and emerging news and information relevant to the campus and higher education community that may inform messages and strategy;· Supports the President before, during and after meetings and events, ensuring thorough preparation and swift follow up;· Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

· Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or relevant field.

Experience:

· Five years’ experience in senior level speechwriting and demonstrated research and fact-checking skills.· Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills· Self-motivated, focused, positive attitude, flexible, professional and proactive.· Keen understanding of and commitment to Bowie State University’s mission.· Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.· Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, and social media platforms.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a communications role in higher education
  • Proven experience in executive communication and storytelling.
  • Experience supporting a senior executive in higher education or government agency.
  • Strong public relations and communication strategy development.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

· Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing for varied audiences with the appropriate style.· Able to receive feedback and implement recommended improvements.· Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.

A skills level assessment will be administered to candidates on Microsoft 2016 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
