Job Description:

Position: Editorial Intern                                                                         

Revision Dates: 12/18/23

Reports to: Senior Editor and Writer                                            

FSLA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Communications and Marketing                       

Salary Grade: Stipend

Classification: Intern      

Scope:

In this collaborative internship, you will have the opportunity to learn important skills and gain professional experience in the world of Communications, marketing, and publishing. Working alongside the college's editorial team, you will be exposed to a variety of Communications and marketing skills, including research and content planning, interviewing, writing, copy editing and proofreading, and the translation of print publications onto digital publishing platforms. The position has the flexibility to be structured around specific skillsets or interests for the right candidate, with opportunities to concentrate on writing (with specialties in journalistic/editorial, marketing, or communications) for internal and external print and digital media, editing, and researching and interviewing.

The ideal candidate will be junior or senior undergraduate student with very strong writing skills. Graduate students may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students intending to enter the communications, marketing, or journalism field after graduation are encouraged to apply. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Assist with content planning and comprehensive communication plans for departmental, divisional, and college-wide initiatives.
  • Research and pitch stories as well as conduct interviews in person or via phone or Zoom.
  • Master a range of writing styles, including e-newsletters, marketing materials, The Hill magazine, and the mcdaniel.edu website.
  • Learn, implement, and uphold Associated Press Style and McDaniel's in-house style guide. 

Responsibilities

  • Research and pitch potential stories for the editorial, web, and PR teams.
  • Conduct interviews with constituents including students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, donors, and friends.
  • Research and draft content for various monthly e-newsletters. 
  • Draft content for website including news stories, alumni profiles, program features, etc.
  • Copy edit and proofread marketing materials and event communications.
  • Assist with drafting front-of-the-book departments for The Hill magazine.
  • Assist with copy editing class notes submissions for The Hill magazine.
  • Assist with converting print version of The Hill magazine to accessible online version via Nxtbook digital publishing platform.

Time Requirements:

This position will require 8-10 hours/week. Work hours will occur in a minimum of 2 hours blocks and will be structured around school schedules and related deadlines. Most work is performed during standard business hours. This position lasts one semester with potential for an extension. 


Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at McDaniel College to apply. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent grasp of the English language (spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage).
  • Experience working within student media is a plus.
  • Excellent people skills and comfort with reaching out to college constituents (including students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and donors) for research and interviews.
  • Ability to shift voice and tone depending on media and audience.
  • Tech-savvy with strong computer skills.
  • Detail-oriented with critical thinking skills.
  • Quick learner who listens and isn't afraid to ask questions.
  • Enough confidence to share your ideas, participate in team meetings, and take (or give) constructive criticism.
  • English, Writing and Publishing, Communication, and Marketing majors and Journalism and New Media minors strongly encouraged to apply!

Working Conditions:

The Office of Communications and Marketing is located on the ground floor of Winslow Center. This is an on-campus, in-person position. Position may be eligible for a hybrid working schedule, depending on supervisor discretion. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely working in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.     

Physical Abilities:

  • The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this internship:
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Viewing a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Limited lifting involved but not more than 10 pounds at a time.
