Job Duties
The Virginia State Police is seeking to hire a Communication Center System Technician at State Police Division VI Headquarters in Roanoke County, Virginia. This position is responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and updating CAD software and hardware. The employee in this position is also responsible for providing training to all new CAD users, assists in the testing and development of new functionality to the CAD system, and acts as a liaison between the field and radio room to ensure proper relay of CAD related information.

• Monitors, troubleshoots, and updates computer aided dispatch (CAD) software and hardware.
• Performs routine backup and maintenance of CAD servers and database information.
• Works to resolve any problems with the CAD system.
• Works with vendors in a timely and professional manner to ensure repairs or updates to hardware and software.
• Assists the CAD Administrator with problems in the CAD/Management Information System (MIS) system. • Maintains hard copy backups in case of failure.
• Assists in a timely and professional manner all CAD/MIS users with any CAD questions or problems.
• Provides reports on statistical information obtained from the CAD system upon request.
• Retrieves historical information for Virginia State Police (VSP) employees and upon public request.
• Responds to after-hour call outs for CAD problems within prescribed timeframes.
• Acts as liaison between field and radio room to ensure proper relay of CAD related information.
• Provides training to all new CAD/MIS users.
• Provides on-going training to all users as new commands and functionality are added to the CAD/MIS system.
• Assist with training in Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) implementation research.
• Assists in the testing and development of new functionality to the CAD/MIS systems.
• Provides CAD Administrator with field user suggestions for changes and enhancements to the system.
• Creates and maintains schedules and employee profiles.
• Adds new employees and marks employees as inactive upon separation from the Department.
• Adds and removes employees from schedules as needed.
• Runs daily/weekly rosters to verify the correct number of Troopers and Supervisors working.
• Keeps the vendor updated on any schedule shift changes so they can be added to the interface to bring the employees into logon status in CAD.
Minimum Qualifications
• Considerable knowledge of CAD functionality and problem solving.
• Working knowledge of computer applications and operating systems, basic networking skills of computer setup and configuration; of VSP Communications Center systems such as phone and recording systems.
• Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated ability to provide training/instruction to CAD/ MIS users; to work independently and as a member of a team; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
• Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification required.
• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, or relevant occupational area.
• Considerable relevant work experience.
• Experience working in VSP's Communications Center highly desired.
• Requires either United States citizenship or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years to apply for VCIN certification.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license for travel to other divisions to assist with technical problems as needed.
