About This Position
Mass Audubon is seeking to fill Field Assistant positions to support the research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Field Assistants will be mentored by Mass Audubon staff in the monitoring and management of Piping Plovers, Least and Common Terns, and American Oystercatchers. This is a field-based position with potential for minimal office work for data management assistance. Further details on specific monitored regions will be discussed at the time of the Interview. Start date is flexible through the month of May with latest start possible by May 31, 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of Coastal Waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species
  • Accomplish the wildlife management, protection, and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program
  • Assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region
  • Assist in compilation of data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities
  • Conduct research on special projects as directed
  • Other tasks as directed

We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

Must Haves

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong interest in wildlife management and conservation biology
  • Applicants should have good communication (oral, written) skills
  • Must be able to work long hours outside in all weather conditions and be able to lift and carry up to 40lbs across varied and sandy terrain
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather)
  • Must have access to a vehicle for daily driving between sites
  • Must pass a driver record check

Nice to Haves

  • Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a career/degree in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, or related field; however all are encouraged to apply

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay is starting at $15.72/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.

Work Schedule
This position starts on May 6, 2024 and ends on August 8, 2024. Variable hours and schedule due to weather and site-specific requirements. Typically 35 hours, including work on weekends and holidays (specifically Memorial Day and Fourth of July), 8:00am-4:00pm.

Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
