Position Description
Under the general supervision of the Vehicular Crimes Division Captain, the VCD Clerk will perform routine clerical and administrative support to the Vehicular Crimes Division.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains filing system of memoranda, letters, documents, and other materials for assigned duty section
- Answers telephones, take messages, provide information, and refer inquiries to appropriate locations
- Answers phone calls from the public about but not limited to Fatal crashes and Hit & Run crashes
- Types and distributes reports, and correspondence; enters computer data
- Complies with civil service, departmental, bureau, and division rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures
- Creates, maintains, and updates critical and confidential files in an organized manner
- Maintains records of the VCD office/Hit & Run Unit/Towing & Storage Unit
- Runs vehicles to see if they are stolen for sale at county auctions
- Supplement reports about Hit & Run crashes
- Sends out letters to the public about Hit & Run investigations
- Performs other assignments and duties as required and/or necessary
Requirements
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- A minimum of one (1) year experience in general office clerical work
- A Clerical Skills Test is required for this position. Minimum passing score: 75% overall with a typing skill of 35 W.P.M. with 85% accuracy
- Harris County Personnel Procedures, Department Manual, JIMS and ARS
- FMLA, LOA, Transitional Duty, Fleet Accident, and Disciplinary paperwork
- Proficient in the use of standard office software programs such as MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
- Excellent organization skills
- Excellent communication skills - both written and oral
- Multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet established deadlines
- Perform in a fast-paced environment with constant interruptions
- Work cooperatively with others
- Deal with distraught individuals and will be expected to keep a high degree of confidentiality
- Operate standard office equipment to include, PC, Copier, Calculator, Scanner, Printer, Multi-line Phones, etc.
- Work overtime and/or varying duty hours as deemed necessary; with an excellent attendance record
Preferences
- Bilingual in Spanish
- Knowledge of AFIS, IFAS, and payroll entry
General Information
CLASSIFICATION STARTING SALARY: $19.26/hr / $1,540.80 biweekly / $40,060.80 annually

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
This role is sedentary, however, the ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds is necessary to lift files and/or boxes of files, documents, etc.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department.
