ResponsibilitiesThe Claims Manager - Litigation & Compliance directly reports to the Vice President of the Claims Department and is an integral member of the Claims Leadership Team. The Claims Manager is responsible for the analysis and management of litigated cases throughout Claims Department. The Claims Manager may directly supervise claims examiners and/or play a consultative and collaborative role with staff not directly supervised. This position is responsible for the development and ownership of the external defense legal panel. Ownership includes: panel counsel performance standards/guidelines, ensuring development of proactive litigation plans, legal bill review/rate negotiation, assessment of performance by each attorney on our defense panel and development/application of analytics to optimize department legal performance. Compliance oversight is a key part of this position with a focus on DWC PAR Audit performance.
Key functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Analyzes, consults and directs on litigation plans.
- Manages defense counsel billing rates, reimbursable items and reviews legal bills for compliance with litigation guidelines. Discusses any discrepancies with appropriate defense counsel personnel.
- Develop analystics to identify trends, savings opportunities and strategies to shorten claim cycle time to resolution and closure.
- Works with the assigned examiner to manage litigation throughout the life of the claim.
- Actively executes appropriate claims activities to ensure consistent delivery of quality claims service.
- 5+ years of successful claim management/leadership experience
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university preferred
- Ability to mentor and motivate subordinate staff
- In-depth knowledge of appropriate legal principles
- In-depth knowledge of laws for workers' compensation
- Experience in attending WCAB hearings and taking depositions
- Some travel required.
