JOB DESCRIPTION: Medical Assistant

 

SCOPE: Under direct supervision maintains efficient patient flow and assist with the patient care, vital, assessments, procedures. Maintains physician’s schedule and performs task assigned by physician.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Transfers patients from the front office to the back office exam rooms, the physician’s office and/or treatment room as appropriate.

 

Records patient’s data prior to each physician visit including, but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes. Obtains all necessary patient’s records required by the physician.

 

Assures appropriate consent has been obtained prior to treatment or procedures, and documents patient assessments and obtains pertinent medical information for referral to the physician, directs patients from the exam room or physician’s office to next appropriate station (treatment room or appointment desk).

 

Prepare exam rooms, order/supplies as needed, and maintains/control drug samples.

 

Assist physicians with exams and procedures as requested. Assists with dressing changes, suture / staple removal

 

Perform EKG or oximetry reading or blood pressure as needed by the physician.

 

Perform lab procedures and processing lab specimens accurately. Follows all labs and outside reports as needed.

 

Obtain blood specimens from peripheral sites as needed in accordance with OSHA universal precautions.

 

Maintains all exam room disinfection protocols.

 

Attends incoming patient’s telephone calls for referral to the physician.

 

Telephones, prescriptions and makes patient calls as required as directed by physician.

 

Schedule patient’s tests, procedures, and hospital admissions and provides follow-up receipt of test.

 

Arranges preauthorization and precertifications and coordinates medical clearances.

 

Obtains new patient records and previous test results, x-rays, scans, etc.

 

Follow-up on the patient’s reschedules and no-shows with physicians.

 

Maintains clean work environment and restocks the supplies as needed. Goes over the preoperative consultation with patients regarding appropriate medicines to withhold that may exacerbate the bleeding complications, collects preadmission testing and/or preadmission results and/or clearances to be reviewed by the physician at least one week prior to the procedures and any grossly abnormal labs or any possible concern prior to weekly meeting.

The assistant will be the patient’s clinical care coordinator from the time of scheduling the case through the postoperative period and beyond. This entails obtaining photographs for the procedures, providing prescriptions to the patient, and postoperative instructions, and follows up with 24 to 48-hour telephone call post-procedurally to assess the patient’s status post-procedure and will notify the physician.

 

May be involved with suture removal and/or wound care dressing changes based on training/certification.

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of medical practicing, care to assist in giving patient care. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.

 

Knowledge of medical equipments and administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Ability to assist with the variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill, taking vital signs, maintaining records, and recording test results.

 

Display excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

EDUCATION: High school education, maintenance of Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing Certification. Preferably a minimal of one-year of clinical experience. Qualifications, phlebotomy experience and ability to start an I.V.

 

CURRENT CERTIFICATE, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION: Current CPR certification is required and maintenance of license.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

Standing and walking for extensive periods of time, occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds, requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
