Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Chief, Office of Recovery and Operations, a Caltrans Supervising Transportation engineer, duties may include, but are not limited to supporting the Departments Winter Operations, Hazardous Materials (Hazmat), Field and Equipment Operations and Emergency Management functions. Assists with developing and delivering training for Field Maintenance employees; represent Caltrans at stakeholder meetings, assist with policy development, research and program development, contract development, provides direct support to the Caltrans Headquarters (HQ) Department Operations Center (DOC) by developing and deploying Emergency Response Plans and Operations regarding events and incidents impacting the State Highway System.

Incumbent will be assigned to the HQ office in Sacramento. Incumbent must be available to travel for various activities, including but not limited to training and district site reviews. Position may require travel of up to 20% of the time. The position may be teleworked per current Department guidelines. Must have a valid Class C driver license issued by the CA Department of Motor Vehicles.

Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.

Willingness to perform work during irregular hours, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays, is required. After hours response, to emergencies and activation of the Emergency Operations Center, is also required. Must be able to travel on a regular basis. Will be conducting field reviews and operations in various weather conditions. Overnight work and travel will be required.

Office environment is a six-story office building, with stairs and elevator, carpet, neon lighting, and functional cubicle-style workstations. The position may be teleworked per current Caltrans policy, but in-office will be required at irregular periods to meet essential business functions.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • Statement of qualifications (SOQ) required.
A Statement of Qualification based upon the four types of experience below, is required. It must not exceed a maximum of two pages, single-line spacing and Arial font (12 pt.)

The SOQ should explain the candidate’s experience and/or knowledge in the following areas:

  • Experience in general Caltrans field maintenance operations, including safe operations, roadway maintenance, and equipment operation. Expand on any specific job-related maintenance operations such as snow and ice control, avalanche control and systems, hazardous materials, etc.

  • Provide an example of taking initiative during your Caltrans work experience.

  • Experience with internal and external coordination, giving presentations and effective oral and written communication.

Experience and knowledge of completing research, preparing reports, presentations, analyzing spreadsheets and data, etc.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment.
